Why will astronauts probably never set foot on any of the giant planets?

I am not sure how probable this is; but here are some of the practical difficulties.

  • The gian planets don't really have any surface where anybody can "set foot on". They are just gas giants; the gas goes way down. An astronaut might be able to set foot on a platform floating in the planet's atmosphere, but not on the planet's surface, since these gas giants have no surface.
  • The gravity of these planets is very strong. On Jupiter, an astronaut would have trouble standing up, since his weight would be more than twice what he weighs on Earth. On Saturn, an astronaut would weigh even less than on Earth - but it would require a tremendous amount of energy to get such an astronaut back out from Saturn. Or any of the giant planets. Look up the "escape velocities" - squaring these velocities gives you an idea of the amount of energy required. For example, on Earth the escape velocity is 11.2 km/second - and escaping from Earth is already a considerable engineering challenge. Saturn's escape velocity is 35.5 km/second - meaning that in theory, it would take about ten times as much energy to escape from Saturn, than it takes to escape from Earth.

How are astronauts inside the spacecraft protected from the heat?

astronauts wear special suits which protect them from the heat

What did commander chris hadfield do?

Who were the astronauts in Apollo 1?

Commander: Gus Grissom, a member of the Original 7 astronauts and the second American in space. Grissom also flew on the first Gemini mission. Had he not died, Grissom was in line to become the first man to walk on the moon.

Senior Pilot: Ed White, the first American to walk in space.

Pilot: Roger Chaffee. Apollo 1 was to be Chaffee's first space flight. Before becoming an astronaut, Chaffee was one of the pilots who flew reconnaissance over Cuba in the days before and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Some say Chaffee took the photos that Kennedy showed to the world during his TV broadcast when he made the crisis public.

Have astronauts been on the far side of the moon?

No. Astronauts have orbited over the far side of the moon, but have never landed on it. The main reason is that they would be unable to communicate with Earth.

Did Ilan Ramon land on the moon?

No. Ilan Ramon was the first Israeli astronaut and the payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia when she broke up and was destroyed upon reentry 1 February 2003. All hands aboard were killed.

Who was the very first astronaut ever?

The very first astronaut was Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut. He made history on April 12, 1961, when he orbited the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, completing one full orbit in approximately 108 minutes. Gagarin's pioneering flight marked a significant milestone in space exploration and made him an international hero.

How are candidates selected to go on space?

They are selected after a qualifying test and of their skills.

What type of a computer does an astronaut need?

The mainframe computers used to guide the astronauts to the moon had less computing power than a computer watch.

Do astronauts have fridges or freezers in space?

How do astronauts scrath an inch?

they scrath an inch by finding the nearest object and rubbing their back on it

Why did astronauts need to wear space suits when they visited the moon?

There is no atomosphere or atmospheric pressure. Without atomspheric pressure the astronauts blood would boil.

Did homer hickam go to space?

Sadly not yet but as his career climbs, he still has not given up on his childhood dream to one day go into space. He says, "I haven't given up on that. It probably won't happen overnight, but in the next five years I hope to go there."

What will happen if astronauts don't exercise in space?

The body is wonderfully good at adapting to what it needs at the moment, and as you don't need much strength in weightlessness, you loselose strength from your muscles and your bones quite fast. Then when you get back to Earth you're weak as a kitten and everything becomes real difficult. By exercising in space you can trick the body not to lose that much strength, which helps you when you get back to Earth.

What can astronauts do with their body fluids while in space?
