How does voice cancellation work?

Voice cancellation is misleadingly named because it doesn't actually cancel out the voice, it just lowers the volume of that particular frequency.

The program will generally find an average frequency (or pitch) that it thinks are the vocals, then turn down that frequency.

As a result, the rest of the recording can start to sound a bit "weird." The voice is usually still audible to some degree in the back of the recording.

What is a good reason to use lossless audio compression?

You dont loose any audio quality, which comes in handy when you are listening to good music on high quality speakers or head-/earphones.

How can different notes or pitches be produced?

A tone generator function or software synthesizer plug-in can be used to generate specific frequencies or notes.

What was used to record music in the 1950?

In 1950, recording studios owned by the big record companies had tape recorders, but they were too expensive for most independent studios. Smaller studios would record directly to lacquer-coated blanks, just as they did in the 1940s. There would typically be just a few microphones, a mixer and an amplifier driving an electromagnetic cutting head, which carved an undulating groove in the lacquer blank on a lathe.

When recording direct-to-disk, there was little possibility of overdubbing or editing. Any mistakes would require another take. Musicians who caused a need for additional takes usually did not get invited back.

By the mid 1950s, tape recorders became more affordable and studios began to take advantage of the ability to edit and overdub parts. Ampex introduced a 3-track tape recorder which was widely adopted by recording studios by the late '50s. After the tracks were mixed to a master tape, however, it was used to cut a lacquer master disk and the rest of the process was the same as during the direct-to-disk era.

After recording, the lacquer disk was electroplated and used to make a metal master, which was like a negative--it had ridges where the lacquer had grooves. The master would be used to make multiple metal molds called mother disks (positives), and the mother disks would be used to make multiple stamperdies (negatives). All of those transfers were done by electrochemical processes. The stampers were plated with hard metal so that they could withstand pressing thousands of vinyl records in hydraulic presses.

After making the mother matrices, the studio would safely store the master disk in their library. The original lacquer would be discarded.

When will 8-Tracks be reinvented?

What has been invented cannot be reinvented.

It is unlikely that 8-tracks will ever be a popular form of music listening device again. While many people who experienced them in their prime are huge fans of the sound reproduction (just shy of that of the LP), they were big and bulky. Technology tends to go toward the minimizing end, and there is just no way to minimize an 8-track tape or player beyond the level they reached in the late '70's and early '80's. Fortunately or unfortunately they are thing of the past.

Assuming you are asking about "8 track tapes" sold to consumers for their listening pleasure and not the recording studio "8 track" the name 8 track is actually a bit decieving. The technology placed 8 mono tracks (4 stereo tracks) across the width of the tape. The tape played in an endless loop with a piece of foil at the loop end (spice) which would signal the playback head to change position to listen to a different stereo pair each time it changed channels. This effectively reduced the amount of tape required for a whole album by approximatly 75%, reducing both the cost to the record companies duplicator and the quality to the consumer by narrowing the width of the magnetic information on the tape. Not that anybody was going to purchase 1/4" reel to reel tapes of albums, the record companies wanted a portable format. (It would be difficult to play a vinyl record in a car) I can only assume that this gave Phillips the idea to narrow the tape and place it into a smaller "cassette" which won the format war in the era. It was however foreshadowing the idea of random access playback that we use today in the form of Laserdiscs, CD's, DVD's, Wave files, and MP3's. (too many computer file formats to list.) It seems we are on a never ending quest for smaller storage space. (how many MP3"s can you fit on your IPod?) Or, (conspiricy theory) how many times can the record company sell you the same music over and over again because your format is obselete?

How do you lower surface noise when playing LPs?

Reducing surface noise on LPs can be difficult, depending on the amount of damage.

The first thing to do is remove as much surface dirt as possible. Various techniques include the use of a soft camel's-hair brush or a piece of velvet cloth, moved in the direction of the grooves. Gently blowing air across the surface can help remove loosened dirt, but use something like a photo dust remover. Canned compressed air for cleaning computer keyboards has propellants and is quite cold, both of which can damage an LP. Blowing from your mouth risks accidentally getting saliva on the disk, which can be pretty gross.

Once surface dirt has been removed, you should use a good-quality turntable with an adjustable-weight tonearm. Keep the tonearm weight within the manufacturer's recommended limits. An old child's player or other low-quality turntable will do more harm than good.

After you've done those things, the rest of the work is electronic. My own experience has been to make a direct copy of the LP onto a computer using as little adjustment as possible. I.e. no equalization, and record at a volume that limits the loudest passages to the "0 db" marking on the recording software's volume meter.

Now that you have a "raw" or "base" recording, you can use any one of a number of different music-editing programs to try to clean up the music further. One particularly good, free program is called Audacity. It provides adjustable hiss and click filters that can be applied to the base recording, so you can experiment to find what's most pleasing (or least disturbing) to your ears. Of course you should always keep the base copy separate so you can go back to it later if needed; don't save the cleaned recording in its place.

If the record is too badly damaged to be recovered using these home techniques, there are several private companies that specialize in restoring LPs and older recordings. However their services can be expensive so you'll have to decide whether what you're trying to restore is worth the money, not to mention searching online to see if it's already been released on CD or mp3.

When should you use CD or Flash drive?

A CD is useful if you are going to play music in an older stereo or car. Most will have a CD player. Some newer CD players will play CD's with MP3 compressed audio, extending the play time by as much as 90%. A flash drive is useful if you want to hold more music (most flash drives hold much more than 1 Gigabyte (1024MB) of info, CD's top out at 800MB. Flash drives can also hold any type of compressed audio or higher-than-CD quality audio (higher than 16 bit, 44.1kHz).

Flash drives also have no moving parts, and are not as susceptible to extreme temperatures, scratching or moisture.

Can you add a hidden track before the first track of a CD using Toast Titanium?

No, Toast created Red Book CD audio discs that conform to the established standards, and cannot create a track before track 1. You can create a 'hidden' track by sticking extra content at the end of the last track with a suitable gap. Just insert a 5 or 10-second gap at the end of the last standard track and then the extra audio.

How do you make your voice clear in a song?

1. Filter out the noise by cutting very low frequencies with an EQ.

2. Use a noise filter like WAVES z-noise ot izotope noise remover (waves is better)

3. use a compressor to compress the sound, usually a ratio of 4:1 will do the job, just trust your ears and listen to a reference, (something you want to sound like)

4. Last but not least - GET A GOOD SINGER!!

How do you avoid loop back audio in recording?

Not quite sure what you are referring to.

If you mean FEEDBACK....turn you speakers down to zero when recording with a microphone...just use headphones to monitor the signal.
