As in any live recording applications, the more length you add to cables, the more noise that cable tends to pick up. Try to keep cable lengths to a minimum. If that is not possible, give it a shot and see how the recording sounds. You may want to try an XLR microphone application as XLR cable are shielded to reject unwanted noise*.

*XLR cables may still pick up unwanted noise when running them at long lengths.

You could try cutting the treble down, otherwise, being a heavy user of Garageband, .. no, but there are programs out there that can extract the voice. The only other way I know is to use Logic Pro.

Garageband itself has no Password functions. If you are the Administrator of the computer, you can allow or prohibit others from running this program with your Administrator password. There are different cursor tools on Audacity. The default one is the highlight tool(kinda looks like a capital "I"). Look for an icon(picture, whatever) of a double arrow pointed left and right, this is the align tool. It will allow you to...well, align them. Haha. I would recommend generating a click track with the same tempo, and using that as a guide for proper alignments. For example, if you need a clapping sound on beat with a drum kit, move the clap track so that it's properly aligned with the click.

Garageband is great for recording songs with live instruments.

It is awful at notating music though. Its does have a pretty good midi interface but the notating is pretty limited.

If you are looking to write scores and music Sibelius is much better. I have only used a demo of Sibelius, but still, it lets you do just about anything with the notation. It also allows you to play back what you've written as well.

Since you posted this in the Audio Editing catagory, I assume you are talking about music waveforms. The current audio waveform view used by all audio editors is actually a very high resolution bar graph, with one bar for every sample (44 thousand per second or more). Newer software such as Steinberg's Wavelab can augment this graph with color to give the editor an idea of not only the volume of the recorded sounds, but the frequencies involved.
