What is the highest top speed recorded for an F1 car?

Fastest is a difficult one to answer, as it's not purely about straightline speed, rather about the quickest way around a given circuit.

Back in the mid- to late-1980s, some of the turbocharged cars were chucking out in the region of 1500bhp in qualifying trim. The Brabham-BMW, Williams-Honda and McLaren-Porsche were reputedly the quickest and nothing has got close since. And these were four-cylinder, 1.5 litre engines, albeit with turbos on them the size of the Royal Albert Hall.

= Fastest Production Cars in the World - Quick Update = Back in March I wrote a post listing the 10 Fastest Cars in the World. It was hugely popular (and still is,) but I've received so many comments telling me that the list isn't accurate anymore. I plan to do another comprehensive post on this in the future, but for now here is a quick update on the fastest production cars in the world, ranked by top speed. On the last post, I also received a lot of comments about cars such as the Lingenfelter Corvette being faster. Just like the last list, this is only for production cars. Will a supercharger hurt your stock engine?

A supercharger or any other performance modification will increase the stress on the engine components of any engine. It isn't a good idea to make such a drastic change to an engine and leave all the rest of the components unchanged. The first (or fifth or sixtieth) time you floor it from a light, you may snap a rod or break a piston. Think this through and it will make sense.

If you don't care about how long you car's engine will last, bolt on a supercharger and go for it. But consider that you might spend some money (approximately the same money) getting the heads redone, snagging a new cam, and then adding on some electronic ignition and some appropriate carburetion for increased performance. They won't do what the blower will do, but you'll run a lot lower risk of scattering internal engine parts down the street when you come off the line as you would with something like, say, a GMC 6-71 on top of the intake.

What types of cars are racing in formula 1?

A Formula One car is a custom-built, single-seat, open cockpit, open wheel race car with substantial front and rear wings and, as of 2006, a 2.4 liter engine. The regulations governing the cars are as precise as possible, but as the top teams have almost unlimited budgets (in good economic times) the teams try to out-lawyer each other in interpreting the rules to their advantage. The Formula One regulations are intended to keep the speeds and g-force loads on the drivers within a relatively safe limit, but the teams manage to advance technology past these limits every year. It is not really possible to estimate the value of any car very precisely, as each is a unique works of art and technology as advanced as any machine in the world, excepting perhaps the United States military. They can generate cornering forces up to 4g (4 times the force of gravity), which means an offramp with a highway sign recommending 25 mph could be taken by an F1 car at something like 150 mph.

The cars are very light, with a minimum fully-loaded weight of 620 kg (about 1,400 lbs) but have aerodynamics so advanced that they could drive upside-down at only about 125 mph, nowhere near their top speeds. The braking forces are even higher, believe it or not, about 5.5g (gravity measurement), and Moto GP (the equivalent of F1 in motorcycle racing) racers complain that that the F1 cars ripple the pavement. The steering wheels are worth US Dollar 5,000 or US Dollar10,000, with a ridiculous number of buttons and controls, and learning to drive one of these monsters is pretty much the equivalent of learning to be a fighter pilot, just without the weapons.
