Why is ballet so important to the other forms of dance?

Why IS ballet important? Dancers ask this very question quite often. For most of them it seems like a very strict and boring dance form in comparison to the more popular genres of today. Others consider it beautiful but inaccessible. Whatever the case, perhaps it is time you took a second look and considered why ballet is a great dance form:

1) Ballet is the basic foundation for most forms of dance. Whatever you learn in ballet, it translates to values that can be used to pursue other forms of dance. The alignment and musicality it requires are only some examples of important qualities in most dance styles.

2) The development of discipline and dedication. Ballet technique is very specific and requires practice to improve. In most cases, the qualities of discipline and dedication translate themselves to other areas of life like work and school.

3) Improving posture. Let's face it: everything in ballet requires good posture. In time, the posture utilized in the studio translates to every part of a dancer's life.

4) Improving balance and flexibility. Two large parts of ballet technique which, consequently, diminish the likelihood of injury in ballet, sports, and other dance forms.

5) Increased agility. While often slow and graceful, ballet has its swift moments as well. Football players often attribute speed and agility to their experiences cross-training with ballet during the off season.

6) Aural, visual, and kinetic stimulus. In laymen' terms: You learn to connect verbal commands and musical cues with exercise demonstrations and perform them in your body. Different parts of the brain are problem solving to perform the movements in time to the music.

7) Confidence. Have you ever seen a five-year-old coming out of ballet class? He/she is most likely smiling and will gladly show you what has been learned. The confidence that ballet instills is not exclusive to the five-year-old demographic. The artistry, musicality, and grace of ballet are great confidence boosters.

Why do ballet dancers wear soft shoes for training and hard tip shoes for concerts?

That is not necessarily true, 'hard tipped shoes' which are called pointe shoes are worn in training to prepare for dances on stage. This is called 'pointe work'. Some dances performed are occasionally not suited for pointe shoes, so soft shoes will be worn for performances, they are quite regularly.

Younger dancers will wear leather, satin or canvas shoes ('Soft Shoes') while training as well as on stage because their feet are not strong enough to hold their weight on their own feet.

How are ballet competitions judged?

they are jugded on several different areas. Expression, musicallity, costume, leg and foot line, arms and hands, head movements, and use of stage. there are usually several judges who each give a number score to each of these areas. then they are averaged out and it is usually out of 100. the average dancer gets about 70-99 out of 100 because no one is perfect!

How much is the ballet costumes cost?

This depends on what type of costume you are talking about. Most small studios order pre made costumes that normally cost around $80. On the other hand, professional, custom fitted tutus may cost up to $2500. This high cost depends on how many layers of tulle the tutu has and how much detailing the top of the tutu has. These tutus are often bought by ballet students in pre-professional ballet academies and youth ballet dancers that compete in competitions like PRIX and such that get you noticed by the ballet companies. Once ballet dancers get excepted into a company, all the costumes are re-worn and fitted to each dancer. The dancers pay no money for the costumes because they are owned by the company and they only wear them for performances.

What is the difference between jazz dancing and ballet dancing?

The difference can be the way you dance. Usually ballet is about the technique more than anything else. Jazz is about the flow of movement to movement and how it all looks together. There are also diffrent because of there shoes. In ballet there are ballet shoes and ballet point shoes. In jazz there are jazz shoes. Ballet and Jazz both are great fun. I am in both. They both have the same diciplene which for any dancing of dance team has a lot of diciplene. Hope this helps you!

Iam going to tryout for a middle school dance team should i have pointed ballet shoes with out lessons?

you should never go on pointe not knowing how to use them. When you do ballet lessons it strenghtens your ankles so if you have never had a dance lesson DON'T go on pointe as there is a risk of injury

also you have to make sure to get them fitted properly and have the right protection. so my advice is not to have pointe shoes unless you have ballet lessons and yourteacher has said you can.

All dancers don't weigh the same, but they are usually very light (male dancers usually have to pick up the ballerinas, so the ballerinas are always very lightweight). The desired weight of a ballerina is 95-105 lbs. (:

Can you wear socks over your pointe shoes on the carpet?

You can totally wear socks over your pointe shoes on carpet if you want to warm up your feet. Just remember that it's never a good idea to wear socks on top of your pointe shoes to go on pointe, as it's really slippery (learned from bad experiences) and don't go on pointe on carpet (twisted an ankle a couple times doing that) unless you mean dance carpet, as in, the flooring in your dance studio.
