How fast should a 13 year old pitch?

I coach a 13U traveling team made up of the best 12 and 13 year olds in the city of 1.2M where I live. The first thing you have to do when it comes to pitching speed is distinguish between "crow hop" speed and "live batter" speed. Crow hop is taking a few steps and launching the ball with maximum velocity, but without much regard for location control. The best 12 year old I coached could hit 70mph on crow hop, and I expect he'll be closer to 80mph when he's about to turn 14 years of age. No one throws that fast when pitching against a live batter, either in a game situation or in pens, because you need control to ensure you are efective in getting batters out. So, the 12 year old who crow hops 70mph will hit 63-65 mph with decent control in games. I expect when he's 13 he'll pitch with control in the low-mid 70s. This kid is tall and skinny, very dedicated to the sport, and has a competitive streak second to none. If he keeps it up, and avoids injury, he's solid college material.

How many feet from home plate to the pitcher's mound in under 10 years old softball?

When did the first baseball glove come out?

History has not kept good records on who the first player to use batting gloves was. But it is thought that Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants is the first player to use them during a spring training game in 1949. He never used them in a regular season game. The first player thought to have worn batting gloves in a regular season game was Ken Harrelson in 1964 when he was playing for the Kansas City Athletics. Rusty Staub is credited with being the first player to wear batting gloves on a consistant basis during the 1969 season when he was with the Montreal Expos. By the mid 1970s they became common in MLB. Today (August 13, 2007), Ken Harrelson does the play-by-play on Chicago White Sox TV broadcasts.

Why are batting averages in baseball and softball are expressed as a decimal to the thousandths place?

That is done to ensure that a winner can be crowned for the batting title. Someone may hit .359, someone else may hit .357. If the decimal point is not carried out to the thousandth, there would be a tie for the batting title. And if there is a tie for the batting title with the average rounded at thousandths, the average will be rounded at ten thousandths to see if that would determine a winner.

What percentage of today's Major League Baseball players played in college?

As of 2011, about 38 percent of the Major League Baseball players had played in college. Within the past 10 years, approximately 56 percent of the picks in the first round in the MLB draft are college players. Only about 10 percent of male college baseball players will get drafted.

How do you clean a baseball bat without harming the paint?

There are a lot of do's and don'ts when doing this. First of all, DO NOT use any sort of metal polish or aluminum cleaner. This would work on older bats that are primarily bare metal and not painted. Also, do NOT use steel wool. This will scratch your bat faster than you can imagine.

What I have found to be highly effective is this: Get some Soft Scrub (without bleach) bath and kitchen cleaner (available at any grocery store). Get a 2-sided sponge (one with standard soft sponge side and one with the slightly coarse but not too rough side).

Dampen the sponge, and apply some soft scrub directly to the sponge. Then scrub the dirty areas of the bat. If you are using the soft sponge side, scrub vigorously. If you are using the coarse sponge side, scrub lightly. Scrub 1/4 to 1/2 the bat at a time.

Have a dry or slightly damp towel or rag handy to wipe off the dirt and residue that you just scrubbed off. DO NOT submerge your bat in water to rinse. If you have a 2-piece "composite" bat, there is always a slight chance water can enter at the joints and then begin to harm your bat from the inside.

In no time, you will have a sparkly clean bat. There is also a bonus of having your bat smell like lemons if you get the scented Soft Scrub.

What does home and home games mean?

It's kind of a confusing phrase, but it just means that each team playes each other once in each city. So, a home and home between the Indians and the Royals means that, playing against each other both times, they play one games (or series) in Cleveland and another in Kansas City. A simple concept with a confusing name!

Who covers first base in baseball when a ball is hit to the first baseman?

On a ball hit on the ground to a right side infielder, that would be the shortstop. The shortstop would be running to the second base in such a way that they would be facing a throw from the first baseman, unlike the second baseman who would be running to the base and have their back to the first baseman.

On a ball hit to right field, in the ground or in the air, the shortstop would also be the player to cover second base as the second baseman would run into short right field to act as a cutoff.

Does reaching base on a sacrifice count as an at bat?

A base on balls counts as a plate appearance but not as an at bat. A base on balls does not affect a batter's batting average.

Addendum: it also counts as a time on base, and figures into the batters on base percentage. As well, if the bases are loaded, and the batter is walked, it counts as an R.B.I. for the batter.

When did baseball player Ernie Banks play?

Who make the most money golfer or baseball players?

Its hard to compare the income of professional baseball players and pro golfers since they earn money in different ways. Professional golfers earnings are determined by how well they play in each tournament (typically 4 rounds of golf). They don't have contracts that guarantee their earnings. They are paid on a week to week performance basis. Therefore, a pro golfer has to play in order to earn money. The better he plays, the more he makes.

Professional baseball players, however, sign contracts and make a salary and bonuses based on previous performance and/or future potential. They make a predetermined yearly salary and can sometimes earn more in performance bonuses. These days, top baseball players earn $25-35 Million a season. Whereas the top money winner on the PGA tour might make around $10 Million in a season.

Endorsements also play a factor. In some of Tiger Woods' top years he only earned about $10-12 Million from actually playing golf. When you include endorsements though, he made well over $100 million those years.

Is there any rule that prevents an ambidextrous pitcher from throwing with either hand to the same batter?

No.

More info on the rule

Harris, (pitched with both hands as an Expo in 1995) was with six clubs over a 15-year career. When he was with Boston, word of his odd talent got out and Bobby Brown, the American League president, gave umpires these rules: The pitcher must indicate which hand he intended to use. The pitcher may change arms on the next hitter but must indicate the arm to be used. No warm-up pitches between the change of arms and if an arm is injured, the pitcher may change arms and the umpire must be notified of the injury. The injured arm cannot be used again in that game.

addition:

earlier this year in 2010 in a minor league game there was a situation with an ambidextrous pitcher who was pitching when a switch hitter came to the plate. After about 15 minutes of the pitcher switching hands and the batter switching sides of the plate, it was determined that the pitcher must declare which hand he will pitch with, and cannot change until the next batter. It is now a rule for MLB
