There are exceptions to the rule but they are probably in the Hall of Fame for an individual fete rather than a lifetime of great playing. In 1996 Brett Butler, then playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsils. The tumor was surgically removed and he too came back at the end of the season. Butler retired after the 1997 season.

In 1998 Darryl Strawberry, then with the New York Yankees, was diagnosed with colon cancer. He had surgery to remove the tumor and 24 inches of his colon. He came back in 1999 but played only 24 games and retired at the end of the season.

And most recently, Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in September, 2006. He pitched his first ball game since the diagnosis on July 23, 2007. He has pronounced himself cancer-free.
