In September 1908, the Cubs were at the Giants. With a 1-1 score in the bottom of the 9th, the Giants had runners on first and third with 2 outs. The runner on first base was Fred Merkle, a 19-year old rookie. The guy at the plate lined a single into the outfield; the runner on third came home, apparently getting the win for the Giants. The fans swarmed the field...Merkle saw his teammate touch home and figured the game was over so he hustled off the field to avoid the mob. But since there were 2 outs, a forceout at second base ends the inning and the run does not count, even if it crosses before the forceout is made.

The Cub secondbaseman Johnny Evers ran to the outfield to get the ball and touch second. A fan allegedly picked it up and threw it as far away as he could to prevent it. Evers eventually did come up with a ball, showed it to the umpires and stepped on second base. The umpire called the out and since order couldn't be restored the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Because of the tie the Giants and Cubs ended up tied for first place. The Giants lost the 1-game playoff and the Cubs went on to the World Series.

As with all collectibles, condition is the most important factor of all providing that the item is authentic. With programs/scorecards the slightest flaws will bring the price down significantly. An exceptional mint condition scorecard could sell for more.

Common flaws would be staining, foxing (yellowing), fading, stains, creases, rips, loose pages, cracked binding, and writing on the cover. Un-scored programs will generally sell at a higher price than a scored program but sometimes it doesn't effect value. The over all condition, and how well the cover displays will.

The value on a "scored" program as opposed to a un-scored program can vary depending on the game, and collectors preference. In general I would say an un-scored program will sell at a higher price.

Most are designed for the specific players needs. Such as longer fingers, more padding around a certain area, longer web area or wider web area. Like most pro sports, the equipment is now designed around the player as opposed to trying out equipment to find out what works. I would add, though, that there are many"professional level" gloves on the market based on the models that players use, with Rawlings and a couple of others offering custom services so you can build you own glove: size, style, pocket, color, etc.) Check out the Rawlings website or maybe Baseball Express to get an idea. Individually signed baseballs usually have the autograph on the sweet spot; the shortest distance between two seams. This location on the baseball is the most preferred by collectors because it is centered as to the point of view, and pleasing to the eye when displayed. The other "sweet spot" is were the manufacturing stamping is placed on the ball. The "sweet spot" on team signed baseballs are typically reserved for the manager of the team, or and the teams most popular player. The choice of the player that signs the "sweet spot" can effect the value of the baseball. Because the "sweet spot" is the most pleasing way to display the baseball, the collector will want to display the player of note as the center piece of the baseball. If the "sweet spot" was signed by a less popular player, and the player of note signed on another spot that cannot be viewed when the "sweet Spot" is displayed, the collector is more apt to pay less for it. The player of note on the "sweet spot" will be more desired, and will bring a higher price when sold. When acquiring multi-autographs on one baseball keep in mind that the first player you approach will sign the "sweet spot" first. Asking a less desired player not to sign the "sweet spot" might hurt his ego, and could land up handing you the baseball back signed on the "sweet spot" or not signed at all. Turning down a player when the opportunity is there is not wise as well. Have a "sweet plan" before you start.
