What is the meaning of the idiom 'don't let the bedbugs bite'?

Because bedbugs hurt when they bite! You say "don't let the bedbugs bite" as part of a nightly ritual - the entire phrase is "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite." This phrase comes from the time when matresses rested on rope supports on the bed, and you slept better if the ropes were tight instead of sagging. Bedbugs are bugs that crawl around the house after dark looking for blood - they get into the bed and bite whoever is asleep, leaving painful and very itchy sores.

How long does bed bug bites last?

It varies with each person. The severity, swelling, itching, redness, welts all are allergic reactions to the secretions the BedBug uses to feed from a person.

When a BedBug starts to feed their saliva contains an anesthetic to keep their victims from feeling pain and waking up. The other chemical that is present is a mild anticoagulant that allows your blood to flow into their bodies easier.

At one end are some people that are not allergic at all and may not even know they have been attacked. At the other end of the spectrum are the people that are very allergic. In some cases the bites have even brought on asthma attacks and hospitalization.

For everyone else typically the bites will go away in 3 to 4 days.

As with any insect bite DO NOT Scratch. It greatly increases the possibility of infections. Lotions and creams will help sooth the pain and relieve the itching.

What are the black marks left on the skin after a bedbug bite?

It is difficult to be sure about this. Everybody is different in how they react to their blood being extracted from them by a bedbug, which usually happens to you when you are asleep in your bed at night. Most people do not get this effect, But if you are getting black marks this is most likely to be part of the allergic reaction specific to yourself caused by the bedbug injecting the coagulant and anaesthetic into your bloodstream for its self protection when it first crawls on to you, and before commencing its meal of your blood.

Everybody is different. With some people there is no perceptible reaction and they often do not even know they have been bitten, some get just very small red bite marks, some just extremely irritating itching which makes them scratch frantically to get relief and some get horrible looking big red blisters on their skin, which with some people do not appear for many days after the bedbug's visit to them . One other possibility is it may be a result of you scratching where the part of you where the bedbug inserted its sucking tube into you after the anaesthetic effect had worn off, and if your finger nails were dirty when you scratched yourself perhaps while still fast asleep.

Can you see bed bugs?

Yes, they are clearly visible to the naked eye but they normally only come out of their hiding place to bite somebody in their bed when it is totally dark. However if you disturb them in the daytime, such as when you make your bed or turn your mattress or else perhaps move some furniture next to your bed where they are hiding, you may then see them running around to find a new hiding place.

They are flat looking reddish brown insects about the size of a small ant, but the nymphs (baby bedbugs) are smaller but still visible to the naked eye about the size of a grain of rice. The most likely place you will find them hiding when they sleep during the day is in the folds of your bed's mattress but they may be in any crevice or fold in the bed structure or in furniture or the floor or wall very close to where you sleep. So if you do feel really itchy when you wake up in the morning and see little red bite marks on your body, such as on your arms and legs, hunt around these places and try to disturb them.

The other way you can see them is during the night when they come out to have a meal. Remember you, or rather your blood, is their food and they only come out to feed on you when they believe you are asleep, and because they then inject an anaesthetic into you before starting to sip your blood you will probably feel nothing while they are on you even if you wake up. Only after they have completed the meal and left you will the anaesthetic wear off and you may then feel a maddening itch and see the little red marks on you.

But if you suspect you may have a bedbug problem in your bed because you feel itchy, try putting a torch next to you . Then try switching it on and using it to search around your sheets and yourself in the night. You may see one or more hurrying away from the light. The best time to try that is during the hour immediately before sunrise while it is still dark but try to move as little as possible when you feel for the torch and when turning it on, for best chance of seeing them before they rush off to a hiding place out of the torch beam.
