No, they live in our houses. Only once in a while, when they are hungry, they will go for a human body to suck blood.

In nearly every area, a landlord has the obligation to provide a rental that is habitable and safe. Bed bugs (lice and similar nasty critters) are a serious health hazard. They often require fumigation of the living space. Mattresses and carpets can be full of lice and their eggs. That sounds like something for a professional, but it is doubtful that there is any specific requirement that he must hire someone.

we had beg bugs last year and we called a professional in to take care of them because it was too hard to ensure that they were gone by doing it ourselves

This is unlikely. Although it is conceivably possible that a live bedbug or bedbug eggs could be brought into your home if someone has them in their clothes or shoes when they come over for dinner and come out in your home, in practice this is extremely unlikely.

Because the way bedbugs first get into somebody's home is most usually a result of them bringing something inside that has bedbug eggs laid in it. Most often it happens when people come back from holiday and bedbug eggs have been laid in somebody's luggage while enjoying that holiday perhaps in the hotel. Or in some cases the eggs are laid when the luggage was in transit such as in the aircraft hold on the way home. Another way bedbugs very often first get into homes is when second hand furniture is brought into the home, particularly a second hand bed, mattress or something like a chest of drawers with crevices where the tiny unhatched eggs may not be perceptible.

Once the eggs hatch, anywhere in the home, the bedbugs are attracted by the CO2 people breathe out when they are asleep so the newly born nymph will instinctively make for the source of that breath, which will be one bor other of the beds somewhere in that home, and after its first meal that bed will become its home from then on as it gets bigger and then becomes an adult bedbug. The human sleeping in that bed will thereafter get bitten while he or she is asleep on subsequent nights and over time more and more new bedbugs will get born and so an infestation may occur.

409 can kill bed bugs to an extent. If you can catch the bed bugs or find them all and then use 409 I am sure it would kill them. The problem resides in the fact that bed bugs are excellent at hiding in sheets, mattresses, and even carpet. So while you may think that you have killed them all. You probably haven't. Bed bugs feed every 4 to 5 days making them near impossible to find because they only resurface from their hiding spots in order to feed.

No there is absolutely no association between bed wetting and bedbugs. Bed wetting is a common problem affecting about one in ten children at the age of five most usually due to slow maturation of the child's nervous system functions concerned with bladder control. A child with that problem is likely to wet whatever bed the child sleeps in. The vast majority of bed wetting children eventually become dry at night usually by the age of 8 at the latest, although about 2% keep the problem into adulthood and may do it all their lives. Bed bugs fed off of blood, and therefore are attracted to pieces of furniture where humans may sit. I cannot see any reason why they would not be attracted to carpet. If you think you have them in your carpet you should be able to see them if you try hard enough. They may escape visibility because of the depth of your carpet, but they are definitely large enough to see.

Bed bugs thrive on dead skin cells, so the more you vacuum and clean the less they have to live on. Professional extermination after a thorough cleaning (below) will make a difference.

You may prefer to take care of this before moving...it will be quite a task, but will make the move easier in the long run (clean and pack as you go?)

You will need to wash all of your clothing, towels, sheets and blankets in hot water (120 degrees) before moving. If you can replace the pillows and mattress, do so for your move. Otherwise, steam clean the mattress and wash the pillows. Upholstered furniture will also need to be cleaned before moving.

Thoroughly vacuum the place where you are frequently, tossing the bag. Pick up all debris on the floor (bed bugs live on carpet, too) before vacuuming.
