The USDA has recommended a IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach for homeowners against the Japanese Beetle. The pest introduced in the USA in the 1916's cannot be eradicated but can be controlled by traps, pesticides, and biological methods.

Ladybugs make a sound kind of like this nEE-pAAh. It is a very quiet sound that is not heard by humans, it is heard by gorillas, unicorns, dog fishes, mice, chickens, and armadillos. Frogs especially like it. They are madly attracted to ladybugs.

I am not sure of all the places they live or even if they are supposed to be in Alabama, but I found a male on my porch last year and a female about ten minutes ago! When I found the male last year I searched the Internet for hours trying to figure out what it was with no luck! When I found the female a few minutes ago I googled and found it immediately! The males are absolutely scary looking! The females are not as bad but still not something i ever want to come in contact with! I'm assuming they are on my property because I live on a fast flowing creek! But from what Ive read so far Alabama is not a common place to find them and they are normally found in the northeast!

They are common at high elevations starting about mid-July when they gather for mating in areas with plants in the pea family, such as lupine and locoweed, which they feed on.

The easiest way would probably be to measure the rate of formation of CO2 in a hermetically sealed chamber, subtract the rate of a similar chamber but without bugs (the substrate might produce some CO2 on it s own by microbial activity) and divide that by the number of mealworms present. Not a simple experiment to do at home, but not completely impossible either. Throw 100 mealworms in a bottle, no substrate, flush the bottle with CO2-free air (made by passing it through a CaOH solution first), then at T=0 use the outflowing air to precipitate CaCO3 in another bottle of CaOH solution, let it run for an hour, and weigh the resulting precipitate of CaCO3 after filtering and drying. Convert moles CaCO3 to CO2, divide result by 100 and you have the production of CO2 by 1 mealworm in an hour.

There are a couple of reasons that black beetles are mean in spirit. These animals have to deal with a lot of animals wanting to eat them.

Fireflies seem to be much more common in yards and grassy areas where lawn treatment and pesticides were never applied. Some experts say the firefly larvae is killed in spring lawn treatments. It could also be because they feed on snails and slugs which might also have been eradicated with pesticides and chemicals.

I've noticed the evenings where I water just before dusk - my firefly count is quadrupled. I'm not sure if its the moisture that's bringing the fireflies or the promise of slugs in the damp areas. On evenings I don't water - I seldom see fireflies. Water the shadiest areas and the areas with most vegetation just before dusk and that will help attract fireflies.
