In the 1700's the word "virtue " meant honesty and truth. He listed them from the most important to the least. To be a virtuous person was a complement that was considered to be the best thing a person could be called. To conduct business in the 1700's the word of a person was considered to be binding and their virtue was counted on as something that was regarded as part of their reputation. We have lost this idea of virtue and that is sad.

They significantly reduced (and continue to reduce) the number of fires caused by lightning. It is interesting to note that many religious people of the time thought that it was the height of evil to interfere with God's will by installing lightning rods.

The Franklin stove of yesteryear works just like a wood stove of today. It is basically a fire place with a metal insert. The amount of wood needed and smoke created was reduced with this invention.

The only time Ben Franklin was elected to a public office was October 18, 1785 when he became President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, which is something like today's office of the Governor.

Franklin was appointed (not elected) as Ambassador to France in December, 1776.

Though no one living today can tell what made Benjamin Franklin so popular with the ladies, it is well known that he had a great sense of humor and had an uncanny ability to negotiate even with the most difficult and different people. This tells me he

Although Franklin was a significant "founding father" of the USA and his work towards independence was significant, no, he was never the President of the US. Contrary to popular belief, Franklin is NOT the only non-president to grace American currency. Alexander Hamilton ($10 bill) and Salmon Chase ($10,000 bill -only circulated for a short time and no longer) were never a US president.

He proved that lightning and electricity are the same thing using a kite, string, and key in a thunderstorm. His experiments earned him fame. He was also awarded honorary degrees from Harvard and Yale even though he lacked formal schooling.

Born and raised in Boston, Franklin worked as an apprentice in his brother's printing business to learn the trade. After working for him for five years, he became fed up with his strict brother, and in 1723, at the age of 17, he moved to Philadelphia where he again worked in the printing trade.
