Betta and Siamese Fighting Fish

The betta or Siamese fighting fish, is a freshwater fish that is commonly seen in aquariums. Males come in a wide range of colors while females tend to be more drably colored. The name “fighting fish” comes from the aggressive behavior of both male and female fish towards other members of their species. Yes, Bettas much prefer temperatures above 75 degrees.
Bettas are tropical fish, and need to be in freshwater, when using tap water let it sit there for a day when you know you're gonna do a water change the next day.

Is a betta a female?

Like almost all animals, bettas can be male or female. Adult female bettas typically have shorter fins than adult male bettas, and are often less "showy" or brightly colored than the males (though colorful females definitely exist). Female bettas have a white bump on their stomachs, called the ovipositor-- this is where the eggs are stored, and where they are released from when mating occurs.

Can you put a betta fish in regular water?

no! chlorine is a harmful and harzardess chemical, in order for any type or fish or any anphibian it need either sea water or fresh water. if you put a fish in chlorine it would die. dont reccomend doing it.

Can nitrates in water kill fish?

Yes it can and readily does in high doses.

I recomend that you buy a water kit from your local pet shop and use it on your tank. Generally if the nitrate meter reads above 5 your fish are in trouble and may die soon.

Do bettas normally eat from bottom of tank?

This can depend on what type of food you are feeding your fish. If you are feeding betta bites, then typically the fish would eat from the surface. If you are feeding flakes, then it's possible the fish is simply waiting for the food to sink.

It's not uncommon for fish to forage around the bottom for food that may have settled there.

What is wrong with my Betta Fish that has hole in head where the eye is supposed to be?

You must use spring water (not just bottled water)and treat it to keep the Ph and ammonia controlled. Ph imbalances can cause a fish to rub against rocks, etc. which could cause the scratches. If you don't have the supplies to test the water, take a sample to the pet store and they can test it for you, and recommend the proper treatment. Never use tap water-the chlorine will kill them.

The cuts could be from flashing off of objects in the tank. Another reason could be that they were fighting in the tank with another fish. You can use tap water for your tanks as long as you use a dechlorinator. Your local fish store will be using tap water as filling all those tanks will be too expensive to use spring water. I recommend seachems prime as it is super concentrated, so it lasts much longer than other products, but there are many other products that also do the same thing. Make sure that the bottle you use to treat your tank gets rid of chlorine and chloramine.

Can you use orbeez with betta fish?

It has never been tested scientifically to be absolutely sure. But many people have used Orbeez in fish tanks and they seem to be fine.

What other fish can you mix with your comet goldfish besides goldfish and koi?

Similar sized goldfish and their variants (golden orfe, etc) should be okay as should other carp species and tench. Just make sure all the fish are getting their share of food and there are no major size differences. Sturgeon are often kept alongside koi at retailers so I would imagine they are fine, too.

How do you save a dying fish?

It can be hard to watch a fish die. Repeated studies have shown that fish do feel pain. Anyone who has owned fish for a while soon learns they are animals with individual personalities, likes, dislikes, and some even show an affinity for contact with people.

If a fish is dying and you think there might be a chance it could live, try doing a water change and adding an airstone to provide the fish with extra oxygen. Be sure it is not suffering from disease by looking for signs of abnormalities such as white spots, fluffy patches, red streaks in fins or body, or parasites clinging to the fish, among others. If any of these signs is present, do research on the symptom and how to treat it.

If all else fails and you feel your fish is beyond hope, there is always euthanization. There are several ways this can be done, but many of these methods are cruel as it takes a long time for the fish to die. Freezing a fish is long thought to be a humane method, but when you freeze a fish, the cells burst and cause a slow, painful death.

By far the best method is to use Clove Oil. It is recommended to use about 25 drops per litre of water. Do not worry about overdosing, because this is what you want. Add it to a container of fresh water and place the fish inside. It may take awhile, but the fish will simply go numb and go to sleep.

The second most humane method is decapitation. If the fish is small and you can bring yourself to do it, lay the fish on a hard surface, and with a very sharp knife, make a quick, clean stroke through its head.

Hopefully, this will prove unnecessary in most cases, but when it happens, it is good to know what to do. Everyone has fish die at some point, but don't get discouraged! Fishkeeping is a fascinating hobby that can provide you a lifetime of enjoyment.

Why is your female betta bulging?

Your Betta fish most likely has a condition called Pop-eye. It commonly results from damage to the eye or bacterial infection. Heres a website to get you started... http://www.fishjunkies.com/Diseases/popeye.php

What kind of water do you put in your Betta's fish tank?

Whether you are doing salt or fresh water tank. Most tap water is fine to use, you must be de-clor which takes out the cholorine that cities use to treat the water. You also must let the water sit for 24-48 hours to get to room temp. Then when you get the fish you acclamate them to the water by keeping them in the bag they come in and attaching the bag somehow to side of tank so they dont get shocked from putting into different temp water than what is int he bag. Usually 2-4 hours is enough. Keep your receipt for the fish, most good stores will guarantee their fish up to two weeks. Petsmart does and walmart does. Dont forget to only take out a little over half of the water when its time to change the water. You leave the rest so that you leave the good bacteria that the fish work so hard to create in the tank and once a week feeding is ample, fish only have a 3 second attention span, so they dont even know when the last time they were fed. Of course if you feed them they will eat but its not good for them....

What temperature of water betta fish live in?

Room temporature

** You have to be kidding me ^

Anyway, temp should be 74-82F. YES you can keep a fish ALIVE at whatever you think "room temperature" is. But you can stay alive in the bottom of a well for a week. Doesn't mean it's a good idea or that you won't get very sick.

Keeping something "alive" does not excuse people from mistreating and neglecting their loving pets.

Can fantail goldfish live without a filter?

All fish need a filter. A Bowl is not suitable to keep any kind of fish in. The basic rules for keeping any kind of fish successfully are . :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter.(This converts the Ammonia that is created by all fish into Nitrate):- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week.(This stops the build up of excess Nitrate) A heater/thermostat is also needed for guppies because they are tropical in their requirements and need to be kept at around 75F. If you stick to the above rules a fish will stand a chance of survival. If you miss out on any of the above I can guarantee that your fish will have health problems constantly and will die before it should.

Can i add a another fish to my exsiting female betta fish?

Almost any kind of fish can live with a female betta, as long as they are close in size. Female bettas are not aggressive like males, so you should be able to put a few in the same tank without a problem

How do you no when your fish is dying?

Before a Betta fish dies you will notice that it will try to swim but it will just float to the

bottom of the tank and sort of be floating on its tail otherwise just lying on its side. You'll also notice that the Betta's gills will not be workaround its fins will not be working Betta Will be fighting for life but the Betta's muscles don't respond i noticed that my Betta tries to make a attempt to live but he just floats to the bottom waiting for death sorry your Betta may be doing this.

You may notice that the Betta will try to swim up, it will not be able to do so and will float slowly down. The Betta may lose color around its gills and one or multiple fins may not be working. It may swim randomly at the bottom of the bowl almost looking like it is sleeping....but dreaming.

Yes. In fact a lot of breeding use oatmeal in their homemade gel foods to bulk out the goldfish. However, this should be alongside other foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and a good quality pellet such as hikari's range or tetra gold japan. Algae is also a good food source (and its free) so either let some grow in your tank or buy algae wafers.

How do hot water bottles keep us warm?

You fill the hot water bottle up with hot water and you place it on the spot that aches. It works just like an ice pack, but it's hot instead of cold!

Life expectancy for fish on goldfish?

If you buy a feeder goldfish, usually their lifespan isn't that long, because they are eaten by another pet animal soon anyway. However, I doubt that their lifespan will not be so different from a normal goldfishs' if you take care of them properly-just like a normal goldfish. It is just that they are normally sold in such crowded spaces that I think they are more prone to disease.

What types of fish can live with betta fish in the same tank?

Provided the tank is large enough (1 gallon of water per 1 inch of fish) Tetras, Corydoras, and most smaller Cichlids, Livebearers, Danios, and Barbs can be kept safely with Bettas. The only fish that Bettas fight with are other Bettas.
