Betta and Siamese Fighting Fish

The betta or Siamese fighting fish, is a freshwater fish that is commonly seen in aquariums. Males come in a wide range of colors while females tend to be more drably colored. The name “fighting fish” comes from the aggressive behavior of both male and female fish towards other members of their species. What fish does good with betas?

They can be kept safely with algae eaters, guppies or corydorus catfish. You can also keep two females in a big tank with lots of hiding places. It isn't a good idea to keep a male and a female together unless they are breeding. If you want to keep two bettas in a small tank use a plastic divider to keep them away from each other but, they may hurt themselves bumping against it so I do not recommend this.

Can a betta live without food for one day?

Not very likely. Beta fish eat in small spurts and should be fed twice a day with very small amounts of food. Do not overfeed (leaving a lot of food so the fish can eat while you are gone) as their water can build to toxic levels of ammonia from the waste. Not very likely. What do you do if your betta fish is laying on its side?

Swimbladder is a disease which symptoms cause fish to become unable to swim correctly, your fish may exibit swimming toward the bottom of your tank or bowl, then floating back up, swimming in circles or laying or floating on his side....

There are three main things according to the posts and articles I've read that can lead to swimbladder disease * Constipation (from overfeeding or feeding too rich foods like bloodworms) * Dirty water (from uneaten food or waste products of fish)

* Bacteria Treatment: Constipation: First, a betta's stomach is the size of it's eye, so overfeeding can be happen very easily. Stop feeding and fast him for three days. Make an epsom salt bath, in a one gallon tank, use 1 teaspoon of epsom salts in dechlorinated water and leave him in there for 5 to 15 minutes or up to half an hour. Then return him to his previous tank (cleaned and dechlorinated if it is dirty.) Adding some salt to his tank water will help ( 1/2 to 1 teaspoon table salt per gallon.)

I have also heard of a the inside of a cooked pea and cut into very small pieces fed to the betta to relieve constipation. You can do this once a week as a preventative. Dirty tank: Do a complete water change and clean everything in the tank with HOT water (no soap) Try and keep the cleaned and treated water to the same temperature so as to not stress the fish. Bacteria: You can check with your local pet store for an antibiotic for the water.

Finally, Swimbladder disease is easily treatable and your fish is not a goner. Betta's can live in slightly salty water and it helps to keep the bacteria levels down in the water which can cause fin rot.

Can betta fish live any other fish?

No. if so the betta will kill the other fish, even the other fish being a betta. Not true... Goldfish will nibble on their lovely fins but I've seen Beta's get along ok with Cories, also little Neon Tetras. By the way, female bettas can only be together to mate, even after mating the male may kill the female. While bettas can live in harmony with other fish, and be fine in a five gallon fish bowl by themselves, the other fish need to be in a tank with filters and all that other stuff. Answer The recommended size of tank for a Betta is 10 Gallons (nominal). So the answer to your question is no. Your 5 gallon (nominal) tank would be actually holding about 4 gallons of water when it is filled to within 1 inch of the top. Add any more fish and you would be overloading the tank.
Well they might

Does a betta fish need a hiding spot?

They sorta can it depends on what color they are and the decorations and gravel. My betta is pure blue and it blends in with the gravel since the gravel is blue and some of the ornaments are blue.

What types of fish don't need heaters?

Cold water fish like Goldfish, Orfe, Rudd and some species of catfish. I have left out Koi Carp on purpose because although they are coldwater fish they are also specifically for keeping in large ponds.

Do dalmatian molly fish get along with other molly fish?

There is no exact time. Here are some things to speed up the process: Feed them good food, LIVE and FROZEN brine shrimp are an example

Raise the temperature of the aquarium to about 80 Degrees F.

Put salt in the aquarium (use aquarium salt).

High PH at around 7-7.5

Make sure there are 2x more females than males.

Can a albino Oscar and a flower-horn mate?

i would say no. you would not know what kind of fry they may produce. also, it is quite impossible as both are very territorial and it is very difficult to differentiate between male and female for the oscar. so it's not worth trying it. i can say NO!

Do fish look after their young?

They do if they can't get out of the aquarium. In the wild, most fish don't have that option since many fish are like salmon in that once they've spawned (females laying their eggs, males fertilizing the eggs), the adults die and aren't around by the time the eggs start to hatch.

Some fish breed several times in their lives but never see the offspring, but some others lay eggs, breed, and one or more adults will stay to defend the eggs and young for a time even after hatching.

The true answer to your question is...

It depends on what kind of fish you are talking/asking about, and whether they are in a natural body of water, or an aquarium. Some fish will even eat their own young if they're still in the area when their eggs start hatching. Guppies are one type that will do this.

Are sucker fish aggressive?

Yes. Several species of aquarium suckerfish can be quite aggressive, mostly as the age, and can grow to be pretty large. The Otocinclus catfish is the most peaceful, and stays small, so is a god choice for a small aquarium. But be careful, they are fragile in unbalanced tanks and must have algae to keep fed.

Is fish fighting legal?

no it is not but it would hurt them to where they could die

How do you know if your guppy fish is pregnant?

Green Spotted Puffers (and most other puffers) are nearly impossible to breed in captivity, and exact procedure has never been recorded. Puffers lay eggs, they don't become "pregnant". It's thought that the female will lay her eggs on a slate stone and the male will fertilize and fan them with his tail. GreenSpottedPuffer.Net

What should you do if your fish is not eating?

It is perfectly normal for a new fish not to eat for the first few days. In fact, you shouldn't even offer food until the fish has been in the aquarium for at least 24 hours. Since any uneaten food will just foul the water unless it is removed. If after 3-4 days the fish still will not accept food, start looking for signs of disease and have the water quality checked by an aquarium/pet store, specifically test for Ammonia and Nitrite. Other signs of disease in Goldfish include (but are not limited to) small white spots, red streaks in the fins, rapid gill movement/lethargic, red inflamed gills, cloudy eyes, damaged ("rotting") fins, or white/gray film on the body.

Also, if you put some garlic in (just a tiny tiny bit) it makes goldfish hungry. Check your fish's eyes as well he might have gone blind therefor he will not be able to see the food.

What happens when you put a goldfish in a tank with other goldfish?

well, an educated guess would be that the latter would chase the corpse of the dead goldfish around until it realized that the goldfish its chasing is acually really just a dead corpse. then, once this fact was realized, the (alive) goldfish would most likely eat the dead goldfish, and that wouldn't be good now would it? so you should probably, most likely try to maybe keep all of your goldfish alive and swimming, not dead and chasing eachothers dead bodies all around.

How do you remove build up from a fish tank?

== If it is Algea you should empty the fish tank and put the fish into a bucket. Then you should clean the tank after that i would recommend buying sucker fish and a under gravel filter as i had this problem!! if it is not this i recommend going to a fish store and asking them about it!!!

Can betta fish aquariums have lights?

This depends on the personality of your fish. Although, your fish may get stressed out if they are in total darkness all of the time. For a fact: bettas hate direct sunlight!! Never put your betta in direct sunlight, even for a short period of time. If you must, put them in the shade.

Do goldfish molt their scales?

Typically a goldfish will lose scales if it's bumped into something in the tank hard enough to tear scales; take a closer look at your decorations and remove anything with sharp edges.
If there are many scales missing in multiple areas on the body, or you have nothing that could cause the loss in the tank for decorations, then it's possible that the fish has a parasite that you will need to treat.

Can a betta fish live in a 2 gallon bowl?

Bettas, like most other fish, like to swim around. A single betta needs a 5-10 gallon tank with a heater and filter for optimum health. Plants and caves make it more interesting for him and a couple of rasboras might work, depending on his aggressive tendencies. They can't be kept with other bettas, but do appreciate tank mates if they have room. The red ones tend to be more aggressive. If he is aggressive, he will not do well with other fish unless he's in at least a 30 gallon tank. People tend to think they don't live long, but if they have enough room, clean water, and consistent temperature, they will be much less stressed and can live for a lot longer than expected.

They can live in 2 gallons, but you can live in a bathroom if someone feeds you. It would probably shorten your life and certainly make it less healthy.

For a few months maybe...A year at the most. That is nothing compared to 5 years (how long bettas usually live for). A 5 gal tank with some ghost shrimp, a heater, filter and real plants would give a betta the best life ever :D

You COULD but I keep my betta, some ghost shrimp, and three Cory cats in a five gallon with lots of hiding places and short/medium/tall silk plants that the betta loves to "weave" through. I'm also purchasing a 2.5 gal for a single betta and some ghost shrimp though. I persoanlly think a betta will thrive in a five gal but can live on average of about 2 years in a 2 or 2.5 gal. You should do water changes twice a week because ammonia builds up fast in smaller tanks and make sure the betta won't snack on any ghost shrimp if you add some. I feed my betta baby betta pellets (he is small for his age) and the corys get flakes (soaked), while the betta snacks on some of the flakes but the corys get a lot of food...The shrimp just eat left overs and are great for that! So I would say go for it. You'll have lots more fun with something that you can decorate and add more fish too though, like a 5+ while if your money/space is limited, a 2 gal will work.

Peace,

Dakota

What a crowd! Corydoras need at least 30 gallons to live a healthy life. You are way overstocked with all those fish in such a small space. Again, like living in someone's bathroom. It can be done, but isn't fair. They're not criminals, so please stop treating then as if they are. This is bold because it comes naturally from your bold. I won't change it, but you might want to. It's not as if either of us is worth listening to while we yell. Corys are schooling fish and cannot school without enough room: at least a 30 long.

Do Siamese fighting fish live in the wild?

When people use 'common names' for fish no-one really knows what fish they really mean. Betta splendens is the proper name for these Anabantid fish and they are all endemic to tropical asia. All stores should know this and should list all the fish they stock with their scientific name to avoid mixups. The common name should be in brackets after the proper name.

Bettas are from Thailand, BUT they also live in the wild in parts of china... there are a few other places but i cant really remember them.. Anyway, chances are your betta was produced in China or it's ancestors were.

Wild Fighters come from Thailand so technically its siamese. The store has obviously screwed up or dont know their fish well enough... and that scares me

YES, other people like to call thn Siamese fighting fish.. But most pet store workers will know them as Chinese Fighting fish. :)

Can betta fish survive cold water?

No. Beta fish are very sensitive. They die easily because they are extremely suceptible to diseases, and if the temperature of their water is slightly colder than it should be, or if their water is not sanitary- has too much waste (pee or poop) in it- they die. I know this from experience. The same is true with goldfish.

Can you put another fish with a male and female beta?

no because the male and femalebetas are the type of fish that live alone. therefor since their opposite sex then there is a chance of them being OK with each other, so if there is another fish with them then they will attack it and eventually killing each other.

How can you tell if your female betta fish is happy?

Female bettas are more at ease with a school of their own kind, it is a fish that moves around or swims in the tank, they eat staple food as a diet with no problem its not a long lived fish they do like to hide in plants if they are in with larger fish, the fish for the most part is easy going and swims around a lot, any fish that does not get enough to eat will pick on even a slow moving larger fish to stay alive. no special diet required just make sure when you are feeding your fish you see the female betta eating. I am sure you will.

What is the record for the oldest Betta fish?

the oldest living is 10 years old kept under lab conditions but is usually up to 6 years max
