betta fish can be finicky some experts say...I have cared for many. change up the food often and put them in a place they can see you ( very important) . I had over 50 betta fish alone in my lifetime I keep two on my desk at workin a 1 gallon tank with a divider...make sure not to over feed them, make sure to try flake food first, then bloodworms, then try the many frozen variety at any petstore... if its the right time of year you can find some petstore that sell live black worms which i have yet to find a betta that can resist those.. the bad news is black worms are often not kept by the petstore in good condition so some will make sick fish or dead fish.. i catch mosquitoes and feed that to them.. they love those too but so do all my fish

If your reticulated water contains chlorine (a gas) you will have to either wait overnight for the chlorine to evaporate off or use one of the commercial chlorine removers available at most pet shops. If the water contains chloramine (Not a Gas) you will definitely have to use a commercial remover. I concur. Just to add, I would make sure you read up on how to properly cycle your tank and use hearty fish when starting. Like the previous person said if it is chlorine (and a smaller tank) you can leave your water out 24 hours before a 30% change and should not need to add any chemicals to remove additives in the fresh water.

You can NOT keep female and male bettas together! Male bettas can get very aggressive and will fight to the death. Make sure to separate your bettas.
