Why did Bill Cosby leave high school?

Dr. William H. Cosby, Jr., while still serving as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy, and working with Korean War Veterans at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Physical Therapy, realized the need for an education and began taking correspondence courses to receive his equivalency diploma (he failed 10th grade and didn't return, enlisting in the Navy when he was old enough).

After getting his diploma, he won a Track & Field scholarship to Temple University in 1961-62. He studied Physical Education while at Temple.

He eventually left before graduating to pursue a career in comedy. He didn't return to college studies until the 70's. In 1976, he received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts. His Doctoral dissertation was entitled "An Integration of the Visual Media Via 'Fat Albert And The Cosby Kids' Into the Elementary School Curriculum as a Teaching Aid and Vehicle to Achieve Increased Learning".

In addition to the Ed. D. he received from UM, he has been awarded several honorary degrees from many prestigious Universities for his contributions to society over the years.
