Do mother birds really pretend to have a broken wing to protect their young?
Oh, yes. Anything to get the intruder away from the nest, even if it takes her life, which she doesn't plan on happening. Now the broken wing thing does not cover all birds. You would find that many ground nesting species. Some common ducks just make themselves noticeable and lead intruders away from the nest. Other birds become very aggressive. Have you ever seen a Catbird beat up on a poor cat? She dives and pecks and doesn't give up until the cat disappears.

When a hen duck lays her egg and leaves her nest for a day will she come back?
When people are around, ducks will spend little time on their nest. The duck is more concerned about not having intruders find the eggs, so she is very active to draw their attention away from the nest. However, she usually settles down at night and protects them from the cooler temperatures.
I have found that if the duck has been broody for two weeks, and her eggs are infertile, she will abandon the nest, take a break and start again later. The infertile egg does not maintain it's temperature, and even when under the duck all night, it stays cooler than a fertile egg which is generating heat on its own. If it is only one or two "dud" eggs, then the duck will not sit on them, but will push them into the nesting material. That way, if they should become rotten and explode, they will not dirty the good eggs.
If seeds aren't stored properly, over time they may become "stale" and they will lose their nutritional value. Seeds will dry out, sprout, mold, and harbor insect larvae. All but the last is not good for the animals who eat the seeds. What many people do, if they have seeds left over at the end of the time that they winter-feed the birds, is that they spread the seeds in a selected area and thus the birds will have "greens" to eat in the late spring.
I live on the 3rd floor of a condo. Is that too high for a bird feeder?
No, I live on the twentieth floor, pigeons and doves make it to my feeder.
Why do smaller birds attack larger birds?
Some species of birds take the eggs or babies of other species. The parents of those species will guard their nest and try to chase away the predator birds. In the US, Red-tail Hawks will be chased by crows; crows will be chased by Grackles; Grackles will be chased by sparrows; House Wrens and Blue Jays will be chased by every bird in its neighborhood; and a Mockingbird will chase anything that gets in sight of its nest. If this bothers you, try setting very cracked egg shells beneath a small tree or other likely place for a nest (washing is not necessary). One reason for "nest predation" is to get calcium for a bird's own eggs. Nest defense and eating meat, however, are general and will persist.
You are but one of several people asking about this bird. It is a Northern Flicker, a species of woodpecker that spends most of its time on the ground.
That black line? That's called a Malar Stripe, and is an identifying characteristic of the "Yellow-shafted" morph, also known by the nickname "Yellowhammer."
Out West, we have the "Red-shafted" morph, which looks pretty much the same but has a red malar stripe, and stunning red feathers where your bird's are a stunning yellow.

Can a baby bird be released when it's an adult if its been hand raised?
yes, it can it just needs to be kept in a warm place
Sad to say, it's a lost cause. A baby bird is a hard rescue when it's well. One with a broken leg is just not salvageable. Put it in some cover, grass or a bush and let Nature take it's course. You had good intentions, but sometimes you just have to walk away.
You could at least try!!! Look up "bird rehabilitator in blank county". You could also call a vet and ask for bird rehabilitator numbers. Keep the baby as comfortable as possible in a junk towel or paper towel nest. put it in a shoe box on a towel on a heating pad set at 2 or about 98 degrees F.
Does a red robin come back to the same nest after she has eggs?
No she doesn't. She makes a new nest another place. After she raises the baby.
When a person touchs a baby bird egg will mom bird come back?
yes the mother bird will come back. birds do not act as other animals such as deer. in this case the mother may not come back because she is conditioned to be afraid of humans and there smell. birds on the other hand act mostly on what they see. if mother bird never saw you she wouldn't know her eggs were touched. even if she did see that she more than likely would try to defend the nest. in the wild research biologist also go to various bird species nesting places to try and calculate population etc. and this has no effect on a mother bird returning to her nest.
What do you call the science of bird watching?
Birdwatching or birding is the observation of birds as a recreational activity. It can be done with the naked eye, through a visual enhancement device like binoculars andtelescopes, or by listening for bird sounds.
Birding often involves a significant auditory component, as many bird species are more easily detected and identified by ear than by eye. Most birdwatchers pursue this activity mainly for recreational or social reasons, unlike ornithologists, who engage in the study of birds using more formal scientific methods.
When can I see a Chimney Swift in New York?
The New York swifts are at their winter home in South America. They will be back to the city when the small flying insects that they eat are out and about again, probably late April or early May. In the meantime, you can find out lots more about them at the link below the ads on this page.
If you're in North or South America, the bird is likely a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak.

What kind of bird has a gray breast with blue wings and blue tail?
Did it look like a possum from behind? With a big bulbous dome of a body? Did it have a waddle? My coworker "saw one" at school. Although we have not discovered the elusive bird's identity as of yet, we continue. Merely the fact that there is one more believer out there gives us hope.
