Absolutely. They are actually more carnivorous than grizzlies are, and if they are hungry enough they will actually stalk humans and hunt them down for food. They are very unpredictable if you are not familiar with bear-Psychology or bear-behaviour. They can climb trees, which is not good if you choose to shimmy up a stout tree to get away from a black bear. And, playing dead will not make a black bear lose interest in you, rather it will think you are a fresh meal and start tearing flesh from your bones. If you meet a black bear, you must prepare for battle with anything you have on hand, be it a stout stick, your backpack, bike, a knife, gun, or feet or fists. But if you meet a black bear and it does not react in defense to you, but simply keeps its eye and ear on you, simply walk/back away slowly away from the bear. I'm not sure about other animals but there is a lot of mutualism between plants and Black Bears and other bears. One way they help each other is: the bear, in some cases helps disperse (spread) the seeds. And, in return the plants qact as food for the bear.
