Blues Music

The 'official' blues originated in America from African Americans around the time of the late 1920's, (also known as the roaring twenties). The lively upbeat feel of the music contributed and was in symmetry with the feel of the Roaring Twenties.

"Blues started as a derivative of the music of African Americans in the Mississippi Delta and other places in the southern parts of the US, such as New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis and other major cities where African American culture grew."

Although there is not much information about the blues, one can say that the blues had African roots, as during the 1900s many slaves sang in the rhythmic tune of the blues.

it started through African slaves, on ships. They would sing songs together from Africa and the American masters would here them singing and copy their ideas in America.

They would mix together African music and Jazz music that was fashionable in America at that particular time.

Traditional blues songs had several verses of four-lines of free-flowing text, almost always without refrains. Often the last verse repeated the first verse for song closure. Line two was always a repeat of line one. The third line was some sort of elaboration of the simple statement made in line one, and the fourth would be a simple conclusion.

The song was written by William Harris circa 1928. It was recorded by Canned Heat in 1967 and then again by Rory Gallagher in 1972.

Blues music is a style of music that is based around using "blue notes." It started in African-American communities in the United States and was influenced by various things, like spirituals, field hollers, church music and chants. The genre has been highly influential to rock 'n' roll music of the past and modern day. It also paved the way for rhythm & blues (R&B), bluegrass and jazz.

History

Blues music as a genre was born along the North Mississippi Delta after the Civil War. With vast influences ranging from jump-ups (rhythmic dance songs) to African roots, blues music was only performed only live for years.

Time Frame

African-American composer W.C. Handy introduced the blues between 1911 and 1914. Blues exploded nationally in the 1920s when Mamie Smith performed the first blues tune with vocals: "Crazy Blues" (1920).

Geography

Blues music left Memphis, Tennessee and migrated north to Chicago and Detroit where the scene intensified in the late 1940s and early 1950s with artists such as Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. They performed what is referred to as "Mississippi Delta Blues."

Significance

In the early 1960s, many British and American rock and pop musicians, like the Rolling Stones, were highly influenced by blues and brought the music to young, white cultural mainstream at the time.

Blues music did not end. It may not be quite as popular as it once was, but it certainly did not end. Blues music inspired all rock guitarists, and that style simply became much m ore popular.

Blues has many many different sounds, as there is a huge range of styles within the Blues genre, such as Boogie Woogie, Classic Blues, and Jump Blues. Unlike the common misconception, Blues does not have to have a "sad" or "blue" sound to it, of course it can, but it doesn't always. Boogie Woogie is a good example of a spirited and cheerful style of Blues. It is almost impossible to describe the style of Blues overall, as it is such a diverse genre. Blues uses a major, minor, or hybrid Blues scale, which helps create different qualities of sound in pieces.

The guitar, either acoustic or electric, is the primary instrument in blues. If the guitar is plugged in, then bass and drums will also be present, forming a "power trio". When unplugged, the guitarist/singer may be alone. The guitar is often played with a slide. Harmonica is used very often as well. Horn sections, organs and pianos are all fairly common. Fiddles are not typically used, nor are banjos or mandolins usually.

The African-American slaves are responsible for these styles of music. Jazz and blues music was brought to America by the African-American slaves. By the year 1808, there were almost 500 000 slaves in the U.S. Most of these slaves came from West Africa and brought their culture, including their music, with them. There would be festivals in New Orleans, New England and New York. So, one could say that jazz and blues music originated in West Africa, or from African-American slaves from across the United States.

Older jazz is much more basic because the musicians did not know as much about their instruments. For example, before John Coltrane's time, altissimo was not popular among jazz saxophonists. Also, contemporary jazz bands often times use more modern recording methods and in many cases the sound quality is worse on older jazz records. Due to advances in recording technology, now it is easier to hear individual parts like the 2nd alto or 3rd trumpet part.
