The main difference between LAN, MAN and WAN is the scope and coverage of the networks. LAN (Local area network) is usually used to connect computers in smaller distances such as in a building or in offices. They use various topologies such as bus topology, ring topology, star typology etc to connect the computers and share information only among the computers connected in LAN. A Metropolitan Network covers larger coverage than LAN and is usually used for connecting a city rather than single organization. A Wide Area Network is collection of networks or many LANS. The perfect example of WAN is internet which connects thousands and millions of networks. Another factor which distinguishes between LAN, MAN and WAN is that LAN and MAN are owned by certain entities such as government, educational institutions or organizations whereas WAN (i.e. Internet) is not owned by anyone.

I don't like to think of LANs and WANs in terms of distance. I think of them more in terms of the equipment used. When you're using routers and switches and other networking equipment that you own, its your LAN. You manage it, you're in control of it, you fix it when it breaks. A WAN on the other hand, means you're using someone else's equipment, like an ISP. Your ISP manages the WAN, they control it, they fix it when it breaks. You don't have access to the routers and switches and other equipment on a WAN.

You need to know if your laptop has it built in. If it dosent you need to buy a bluetooth adapter. I think amazon has them. if it does go to the control panel and look for anything that says blutooth click on it and that will tell you further instructions.

having had my Travelmate for over 3 years i was determined to find out.

Click on Start and then Search. Do a programme search for Bluetooth and eventually you'll find a huge page of icons labelled Bluetooth Drivers. It was on your computer all the time!

Bottom left is an icon called setup.exe. to its right is a PDF manual.

between the two of them you ought to be able to work it out. If i can, you can.. I'm halfway though at present but at least now I have the bluetooth item in my tray down the bottom.

Why it doesn't come ready installed heaven only knows.

(two hours later). Not so fast. I think what i'd done is inadvertently download the drivers. Had the icon on my taskbar and everything but it STILL didn't work.

It seems from research on other discussion groups that many of these Acer laptops are/were sold without the hardware on the motherboard (whatever that is) in the first place, so if you don't have the hardware the drivers are useless. I've had to do a "system restore" to get rid of the drivers.

So there are a lot of very unhappy, nay angry, customers out there who are wondering why they have a computer with a nifty illuminated Bluetooth button on the front that always says "No Device" when you try to switch it on. I originally thought the "No Device" might mean that you have no outboard device nearby which you are trying to connect to (eg in my case mobile phone). But no, it seems the "No Device" means no hardware on your machine.
