Border Collies

As its name suggests, the Border Collie originated from the borders of England and Scotland. Because of their intelligence, stamina and hard-working personality, Borders have been trained to work as sheepdogs. These active dogs were mainly bred for working ability instead of its appearance. As a result, they come in many varieties of coat colors and markings and two coat types, smooth and rough. This category has questions relating to the different features of the Border Collie.

What happens when you breed a Jack Russell female with a Border Collie male?

It should not be done purposely, but if it did happen, the female Jack Russell would have to have a C-section to be able to have the pups ... they would be too big to birth naturally. It would also be dangerous for her to be pregnant with pups of a much larger dog, but if she were to get pregnant with only a few instead of several, she might be OK. The pups would be medium-sized dogs ... not as small at the JR, and not as large as the collie. Anyway, because of the danger involved to the mother and subsequent pups, purposeful breeding between these two should never be done.

Why does dog hair come out in clumps when a dog sheds?

This is called blowing coat. This is when German Shepherds loose their undercoat all at one time over the course of a couple of weekes or so - the undercoat oftentimes comes out in large tufts.

This can be hormonal or seasonal but in most cases it is simply the dog renewing it's own undercoat naturally so in order to get a new undercoat you have to get rid of the old one first.

Best advice during this time is to be patient and groom, groom, groom your dog. Learn more about it in the German Shepherd by reading here:

Some Border Collies may appear fat in their chest due to a combination of genetics, diet, and lack of exercise. While they are typically lean and athletic dogs, those that are overfed or not sufficiently active can develop excess weight, which may accumulate in various areas, including the chest. Additionally, some dogs may have a naturally broader chest structure, which can give the appearance of being overweight. Regular exercise and a balanced diet are essential to maintaining a healthy weight for this energetic breed.

Does anyone know how to make a border collie part lab to stop biting and chewing?

If it is a young dog, this is very natural behaviour and if it is an older dog it could be because it is bored, lonely or frustrated. Make sure that your dog has plenty of toys, including rubber bone type ones on which he can chew.

Play with him lots, give hime loads of exercise and keep challenging him to new tasks and learning situations. Then he won't get bored and he won't chew obsessively

Why is my border collie girl sniffing her hind legs and butt area?

Your border collie may be sniffing her hind legs and butt area for several reasons, including natural curiosity, exploring scents, or checking for signs of irritation or infection. Dogs often use their sense of smell to gather information about themselves and their environment. Additionally, if she is excessively sniffing or showing signs of discomfort, it might be worth checking for issues like allergies, fleas, or other skin conditions. Your german sheperd is losing her winter coat but it is coming out in clumps?

If your German shepherd is losing her winter coat but it is coming out in clumps, it may be fine or it may be a sign of a problem. Sometimes when the undercoat comes out it all comes loose at once and big clumps are not unusual. If your dog's skin seems irritated or if she is losing her outer coat as well, she may have a skin problem that requires veterinary treatment.

How are border collies with other dogs?

In my experience, it all depends on how old the dog is. If the Border Collie is older, it will try to fight (playfully) with the younger dog to display its dominance. this could become a habit after a while and if the other dog grows up to be large, your dog may get hurt. If the Border Collie is younger, it will try to fight up to gain dominance. but with proper training, you can get them to get along. This would not fix the situation of the other dog if it is younger because it would have the influence of the ever persistent Border Collie to keep it "fighting". Hope this helps!
