The first school chosen was the English High School who in gratitude for the sacrifices of the Union Army, chose their uniform colors of Navy Blue and Columbian Blue as their school colors. Cadets wore civil war uniforms and drilled with real rifles, while cadet oficers wore swords. At the end of the school year, the students who best performed their duties were given the rank of second lieutenant and incorporated into the Union Army; in effect, they became part of The Grand Army of the Republic!
