What is the Ultimate reality in Buddhism?

Ultimate reality, higher consciousness, the mystical state, buddha consciousness, god consciousness (and there are more). Each is a state of mind that cannot -- cannot be described. It can only be discovered from within.

This discovery can only arrive as insight from within. Each must discover it independently of anyone else. This is why it can never be described. The way or path to attaining this precious gift can now be described. The mystical experience is the onset of the mystical state. In the next 2-3 months, I will explain why and how this state can be attained. And, too, science and religion, as they relate to consciousness will be seen as not being in conflict with one another, but rather that they actually work together to reach that precious state of mind. This will come out at two conferences: The Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness, March 2011 in Portland, OR. The other is a conference to be held in at Columbia University in April 2011.

Compare Buddhism and Hinduism?

The essential difference is that Hinduism is a belief system that requires faith, and Buddhism is a system of separating what we can know with relative certainty from what are assumptions, and basing our actions on those certainties instead of faith.

Hinduism is a word assigned by Westerners to a variety of belief systems that grew out of ancient Vedism, and involves identifying oneself as having an "atman" (Westerners translate as "soul") that is part of a larger All Being (Brahma); that our atman transmigrates life to life until we purify ourselves enough to gain knowledge that makes the situation clear, then we can become one with Brahma and end the cycle of reincarnation (also known as "samsara").

The Buddha denied that there was an eternal, unchanging "atman". His teaching was grounded in what we can do in this life to relieve suffering. He showed us ways to see for ourselves just how we cause our own problems, and offered a set of skills to see this more accurately and get past it.

The holiest man to date?

There are several problems with identifying the "holiest" man.

  • The first is that every religion seems to be pulling for its own founder, leader or demi-god.
  • The second is that there are no measurable criteria (Does finding the way to enlightenment trump the founding of Scientology?)
  • Thirdly the winner might not be known even to himself. Like the Jewish Tzadikim (38 humble righteous ones) the most holy person might just labour away doing good without fanfare.

It depends on your cultural references:
  • To Christians it is Jesus.
  • To Jews it may well be any of the 36 tzaddikim/righteous persons in the world who receive the Shekhinah/the Divine Presence
  • To Moslems it would be the Prophet Mohammed
  • To Sikhs any of the gurus who developed their religion.
  • To Buddhists, although he is not "holy" The Buddha holds a special position of respect

What do buddhist eat for breakfast?

Buddhists are allowed to eat anything that is offered to them, including meat and fish, as long as they did not kill the meat or fish or the meat or fish was not killed specifically for them. The Buddha ate meat and actually died after eating tainted pork. Many Buddhists are vegetarians because of their compassion for all sentient beings; that is, if they stopped eating meat and fish then there would be less of a need for producers to kill the animals and fish.

The concept of salvation in Buddhism?

The Christian concept of salvation(being saved from your sins and eternal damnation by a deity or his agent) does not exist in Buddhism. In Buddhism there are no sins just unskillful living which prevents you from escaping suffering and the cycle of death and rebirth. Escaping this comes from your own efforts and understanding as directed by the Eightfold Path. Once enlightenment is achieved you may enter a state of Nirvana and lose the last illusion of the separate self or not. Mahayana Buddhists believe you can return to the cycle of death and rebirth to help others attain enlightenment.

What was the 4 things that Buddha saw that changed his life?

Prince Siddhartha rode with Channa, his charioteer and saw an old man whose head was white and his body was withered - every living being will become old like him. Next time the Prince saw a sick man, thin and weak and scorched by fever - if health be frail as that who then can take delight in pleasure. Next time the Prince met a funeral procession with a dead body on the bier - death is inevitable and comes to all. The forth time the Prince met a calm and dignified hermit, a religious man who has abandoned all worldly pleasures and has found peace.

What does right effort mean for the 8 foldpaths of Buddhism?

How does one know what do to in a given situation? For me, the answer is, one needs to bring a tremendous amount of consciousness to the moment. Then, divinity will flow thru you, and you will take the right action. This is right effort.

Now -- how to gather consciousness? Meditate. Become "enlightened."

Think of love as an analogy. It may sound like a cliche, but you cannot love someone if you are not filled with love yourself.

You cannot be of service in any way (large or small) until you have attained to higher consciousness. And the rare few who have attained to enlightenment have become pure light, pure delight.

I must meditate. To raise my consciousness, so that, more and more, in each moment, I have a chance to respond with clarity and beauty and harmony. So that my choices align with the incredibly complex mix of seen and unseen influences at play. Simply being smart, and using my mind to weigh the pros and cons, will not be enough. One needs pure consciousness to guide one, and once again, this is obtained through meditation.
