Calling and Area Codes

In North America, +1 881 is not in use as an area code. However, it was previously used as a "replace" code to permit paid international calls to North American toll-free 888 numbers. A foreign caller wishing to reach an 888 number could dial +1 881 and then the 7-digit number, paying the ordinary international toll charges but completing the call.

Telephone country code +881 is used for satellite phones including Iridium and Globalstar.

To call abroad, dial your international access prefix, then the country code, city code, and subscriber number.

The international access prefix depends on where you are calling from. For example, if you are in western Europe, the prefix is 00, which is the most commonly used prefix around the world. However, in the USA and Canada, the prefix is 011. Australia uses 0011, Japan uses 010, and Russia uses 8~10. If you're using a GSM mobile phone, though, you don't have to worry about which prefix to use: just program the number with the plus sign and the country code.

The country code is a number between 1 and 999 that identifies a nation or an overseas territory. It is usually written with a plus sign, where the plus sign indicates "insert your international access prefix here." For example, France is +33, New Zealand is +64, Ghana is +233, Fiji is +679, and Russia and Kazakhstan are +7.

The city code is a domestic area code, but in most(but not all) countries where area codes begin with 0, you must drop the leading 0. For example, Amsterdam is 020 within the Netherlands, but becomes +31 20 internationally. However, Italy and a handful of African countries have numbers that keep the zero, like Rome's 06 area code which becomes +39 06. Also, a few countries do not have area codes or city codes, as such.

The subscriber number is the rest of the telephone number that you are trying to reach.

In North America (USA, Canada, etc.), area code 348 is unassigned.

Telephone country code +34 is Spain, and a number beginning with +34 8 is a landline.

The area code for all of Jamaica is +1 876.

From the US, Canada, and other countries (mostly Caribbean islands) that use country code +1, you dial a call to Jamaica the same way as a domestic long-distance call, although international toll rates will apply.

From the rest of the world, dial your international access prefix (e.g., 00, 010, 0011, etc.), then country code 1 and area code 876, and then the 7-digit number within Jamaica.

Transylvania is part of Romania, which has country code +40.

There are other places named Transylvania in various countries, including the U.S.

00 isn't part of the country code, it is a commonly used international access prefix. Country code +33 is France, and +33 6 is a mobile number.

The easiest and least confusing way is to enter all numbers in international format, provided you are using a GSM cell phone or other compatible system. Note also that you do not need to know where the cell phone that you are calling is physically located: you dial the number the same way as when the mobile is in its home country, and the mobile network will automatically re-route the call.

To call a number in Italy, prefix it with country code +39 (including the plus sign). Note that, unlike most countries, you do not drop the trunk prefix 0 from the beginning of the Italian number. For example, a landline number in Rome will begin with +39 06. Mobile numbers in Italy begin with +39 3.

To call a number in Australia, drop the trunk prefix 0 from the Australian number and replace it with country code +61 (again, including the plus sign). For example, a landline number in New South Wales will begin with +61 2, and an Australian mobile number will begin with +61 4.

UK telephone area code 01732 (or +44 1732 in international format) is Sevenoaks, Kent. The 01732 25 prefix is a "virtual" prefix, meaning that no more precise geographic location is possible.

Telephone country code +58, dialed as 00 58 from many places, is Venezuela, and a number beginning with +58 2 is a landline, but you need the next two digits to determine where in Venezuela.
