EDIT: The truth is CALORIES are only a MEASURE of energy. Calories themselves are not a physical thing. It's sort of hard to understand without going in to a biochemistry lecture. Think of it this way: Your body needs protein, fat, carbs, etc to actually function on a cellular level (which in itself is a simplification, but bear with me). The calorie is a way of expressing how MUCH of those items we need each day. It's sort of like saying "What do ounces do for your body?" Ounces don't do anything, but ounces would be one way of measuring the amount of protein, fat and carbs we need daily. Calories are just much smaller units, we use them as the standard because our bodies utilize much smaller amounts (on the cellular level) than ounces. Hope that makes sense.
