Will using a Pentax AF240z flash gun on a digital Pentax 1st dl camera cause damage?

it should be fine, the pentax240z flash trigger voltage has been measured at 4.8v

I couldn't find the limit for the hotshoe voltage, but it is most likely very high.

(Canons tend to be low like around 6volts max. my Kodak is 400volts max).

Describe the functions of the shutter and aperture mechanisms?

The shutter is a piece of the camera that opens up when you take a photo. The shutter speed is how long this shutter stays open, the longer the time , the more light getting through - and the more motion blur. The aperture is the part of the camera that controls how much light is getting through, the smaller the f stop the more light getting through, and vice versa. The aperture is like the black part of are eye, I do not know if you have ever noticed, but, when you go in to a dark place the black dot gets bigger, when you go to a place with a lot of light the black dot gets smaller, same for the camera. Also, you did not mention ISO, that is not a part of the camera but just a setting. The higher the ISO the more sensitive the shutter is to light, but you also get more noise with high ISO.

Can you return a camera that was a gift with out a receipt?

In many instances, no. However, you should call the store and ask about their gift-return policies.

As well, you could and probably should explain to the person who gave the gift. For example, let's say your Aunt Sally bought it. You could ask, "Aunt Sally, I really appreciate that you thought of me! It's a really good camera; my parents gave me the exact one last year and it takes really great pictures. Would you mind if I return it and instead buy (then name a gift that has a similar price)?"

At that point, you could explain that you need the receipt in order to return the item.

Some valid reasons people return gifts:

  1. It is a duplicate or too similar to one the person already has.
  2. The person got 2 identical gifts from 2 people.
  3. The size is incorrect.
  4. The style or color is extreme. (example, outlandish colors)

Reasons you should NOT use when talking to the person who gave the gift:

  • I wanted money instead.
  • I hate what you bought me.
  • The item you bought me is ugly (in my opinion).
  • You never cared about me before so I don't want your gift, whatever it is.

You should be very considerate of the other person's feelings when you talk to the person about returning the gift he or she bought for you. All of us hope we pick something the other person will love; even if you have a valid reason for returning it (or exchanging it), the topic/suggestion could still hurt the giver. Some relatives may also feel more hurt or defensive, for example, a parent you don't live with so he or she only sees you at certain times in the year. Older relatives may feel offended and may feel you should be more grateful.

The key is to make good choices and decisions. Will it really HURT you to say "Thank-you" and just keep the gift? Is returning a gift and getting something YOU want more important than preventing the possibility of hurting a relative or friend? We don't always get gifts we "like"; drawers, cupboards, and closets across the USA and the world bear signs of old gifts never used, but also never mentioned. The giver's intention and the fact that they cared enough to GIVE you anything is what is most important, not just at Christmas but throughout life.

How can one open downloaded pictures from a Sony digital camera when the computer can't find p-suite?

If the images are in a standard format (BMP, JPG, GIF) you should be able to open them with just about any image viewing program; if they're a non-stanmdard format, try using IrfanView (www.irfanview.com).

If you double click on the image, and if it's in a format your photo editing software can use, it should just open up. If the only photo editing software you have came with the camera, you need to get one. Photoshop is great, but too expensive if you're not a professional graphics artist. Ulead makes a nice, full featured photo editor for a fraction of the cost of Photoshop, and it's very easy to learn. Or, if money is a problem, go to www.gimp.org and download the latest version of GIMP(Graphics Image Manipulation Program). It's opensource, like Linux, so it's free. You'll need to download three things. First the gtk installer. This will install GIMP on Windows. Next is GIMP itself. Then, you'll want the help files, which are separate. Run gtk, then run GIMP, then run the Help files, and you're in business. There is also a GAP, graphical animation program. I haven't used it. I use GIMP daily, and find that it's a fine program. Good luck.
