If your away from home can I leave my ferret in a cage or do you leave them in a ferret-proof room?

It would be better to leave them in a ferret-proofed room and they get plenty exercise that way. I personally do not cage mine at all and leave them in my bedroom which is ferret proofed. It's very stressful to leave ferrets in a cage, which can lead to obsessive behaviors from boredom. Ferrets are not caged animals, you cage them for their protection.

From other contributors: You can leave them in either one just make sure he or she has toys to play with while you are gone.

Can ferrets eat pecans?

No, ferret cannot eat nuts. They are unable to digest fruits, grains and vegetables. Nuts would probably cause intestinal blockage, and without surgery, the ferret would die. Ferrets are closely related to polecats, which consume only vegetable matter within the entrails of their prey. As such, a ferret's teeth are entirely unsuited to eating nuts as bits may get stuck between the teeth where they will rot or cause abcesses.

No ferrets are not blind. When a baby ferret (also known as a kit) is born, it has a thin layer over it's eyes meaning that it cannot see. This layer eventually goes away and the kit will begin opening its eyes by the age of 5 weeks old and will be able to see.

Though they are not colorblind ferrets see colors differently to us. Ferrets see the world in grey but can also make out certain shades of red and blue.

Do you need to cut ferrets toenails?

Yes, unless you walk them regularly on hard surfaces such as pavements - I did my ferrets' nails yesterday.

It's easiest if you have someone to help you. Get them to scruff the ferret, which ought to prevent them from wriggling, and use very sharp toenail clippers to clip off just the very tip of each claw (they need to be good quality sharp ones or they can split the claw). Make sure you don't cut the pink bit that you can see inside the nail known as the quick, as this has nerves and a blood supply - cutting it will cause the ferret a lot of pain.

If you've never done it before, try to find someone more experienced to show you how.

I've read about ferrets eating snails, apparently without harm. I would make sure that there was no treatment or poison that snails could have ingested. I've read about ferrets eating slugs, I'm not sure why. Maybe they are not getting their nutritional requirements in their diet.

How do you de-worm ferrets?

The best way is to have your ferret seen by a veterinarian. To the best of my knowledge there is no dewormer that you can buy in the store without a veterinary prescription that is labeled as safe for use on ferrets.

Your veterinarian should run a very simple and fairly inexpensive fecal test to determine if your ferret has worms and what kind of worms they are. Then he/she will select a dewormer that is effective against that type of worm and safe for your ferret.
