The tail serves many functions.

First, it helps regulate body temperature.

Second, it helps stabilize balance, which helps rats climb.

Third, the tail provides a defense mechanism. The tail can be torn off in a process known as degloving; this is particularly handy if a predator captures the rat by the tail. The tail will pull off, allowing the rat a chance to escape. However, this is an injury (meaning it is painful for the rat) and can lead to infection. Degloving is one reason why you should NEVER pick your rat up by the tail!

Male rats can be far larger then females. Female rats range from around 250 grams to 450 grams. Males range from around 400 grams to 700 grams. Female rats are not usually as muscular as males and often have smaller heads and feet. However some rats are prone to weight gain. If when your rat sits, you cannot see definition in their body, such as they look just like a ball, instead of having definite legs , they are most likely over weight.

Many pet stores sell mice as feeders or pets. Most commonly seen are pink-eyed whites, but you may see other colors if the mice are primarily being sold as pets. These are often called "fancy mice" in the pet store.

it may be old age or the mouse might be sick. as strange as it seems some mice in a desperate attempt to relive stress from other cage mates' other pets and even you may pull out their own hair! other cage mates will sometimes pull hair out of another mouse to show dominance in witch case they should be separated. this looks a lot like ringworm.

EVERY DAY! a mouse need clean water and food every day. a mouse will usually get its own food all day but seen as it cant get out the cage, you must make sure that you supply it with whatever it may need.

It depends on the mother rat. If she trusts you after giving birth, than you may be able to touch a baby rat the same day it's born. Being able to handle them as early as possible allows you to check to see if they're feeding and check their overall condition. Otherwise, you could wait a day or two before touching them, especially if the mother rat seems wary. It is also advised that you handle the baby rats as often as the mother rat will allow, so that it'll be easier for the babies to bond with and trust humans.

Mice and rats vocalize for many different reasons, depending on what you are doing depends on why they are vocalizing. They could be doing it out of fear, excitement, warning you to stay away, or they could be doing it to say hey I miss you, or where are you, they could be saying I'm in pain or a number of other things. Also the are very mad or saying water or feed me.Again it depends on your relationship with them and what is going on at the moment they sqeak/chirp. My Rodents often chirp when I am cleaning their cages or when I "forget" to feed them {they get fed at the same time everyday and if I'm even 1/2 hour late they let me know it}LOL......... Kechara

Keep the baby warm. Pick it up and hold it in your bare hand, to warm it. It has no claws or teeth, and it needs to stay warm at all times. Keep him wrapped in a dish towel, or in a small habitat filled with tissue paper set half way (so the baby can move if it gets too hot) on top of a heating pad set to low. Be careful not to overheat the baby, as that may also cause dehydration which could lead to death. Go to the vet or Pet store. Get Ebilac (Puppy) or KMC (Kitten) Synthetic Mother's milk and an eye dropper. The baby is very fragile, handle it very carefully, and hold it upright. Squeeze some of the warm formula into a droplet at the end of the dropper and hold it up to the baby's mouth. Be very very careful to avoid getting it in the mouse's nose, as it will not be able to breathe. The mouse may not want to drink it at first, thinning it with some water may help. You will need to repeat this, a few drops each time (or until the baby refuses to drink any longer) at regular intervals through the day. Watch for bloat. This is a digestive problem where the stomach fills with gas and is very painful. If bloat occurs, place the baby, belly down on a heating pad and massage by taking index finger and thumb and placing on both sides just below the rib cage. Gently but firmly push in and back. Keep doing this for as long as you can. The baby also cannot go to the bathroom on it's own. It's mother cleans the waste from it's body with her tongue. Take a Q-tip and wash the baby's genitals in small movements until the baby goes to the bathroom. If there is black dried excrement clean it off as it may be blocking the release of new material. You should notice both liquid and solid waste releasing through out the day, or the baby may be dehydrated. If this is the case, buy pedia lite rehydrating solution and give the baby several drops. SPECIAL NOTE: If the baby refuses to drink, it must be given Lactated Ringers Solution by injection. The baby should be given the fluids under the skin, but you should learn how to do this from a vet before attempting it yourself. You will have to get the Lactated Ringers Solution from your vet anyway. If the baby is not given fluids, it will become dehydrated. You will need to keep the baby warm, fed and cleaned for up to two weeks before it will open it's eyes and begin to wander on it's own. You can start to ween it from the solution at about 4 weeks. You Can add a few pinches of crushed rodent blocks and may give small pieces of peeled apple or peeled grape to practice gnawing food. At about 5 weeks or so make rodents blocks available at all times and add other fruits and vegetables to it's diet. By 6-7 weeks Rodent blocks should be the main staple of the diet as formula feeding decrease. If this is a wild mouse that you are nursing back to health you should make preparation to keep it for life. It will not survive if released back into the wild.

When it looks fat! It might be pregnant or it might have a tumor.. You must put it to the vet incase there are any problems with it.

Everywhere. Rats are good at adapting to many environments, but they tend to take up residence around people wherever they settle. Any dark, secure hiding place with ample food and water nearby is prime real estate for a rat.

The best option is to place the trap so that it is only accessible via one entrance. Place lumps of wood on three sides leaving the "bad" end accessible. Don't leave any room for a mouse to get around the sides. Bait the trap with peanut butter - sticks to the trap arm, and mice love it.

Best I could do with text I'm afraid, but should give an idea.

This should almost guarantee a catch. The main problem is that people place the trap in open ground, so the mouse can approach it from any angle, not the "kill zone". So it usually sets the trap off without the desired effect.
