How old is a 5 inch red ear slider?
"Unfortunately, you can not tell the age of a turtle by it's size. Turtles grow depending on how big their environment is."
Actually, no. A red eared slider does NOT grow to their environment. If you feed it, it will grow. If not it will, obviously not grow then die. But there is no way to tell how old a RES is unless you hatched it or know who hatched it. It does not matter how big it is. Some owners over feed or under feed their turtles so there is no way determining it by size either.
How do you tell turtle eggs from snake eggs?
There's no need to 'protect' them. Snakes wouldn't eat the turtle eggs anyway. The only species of egg-eating snake - eats small bird eggs - not reptile eggs.
No. Possums have no interest in harming desert turtles or any other living creature.
However, there is a misconception that "possums" are the same as "opossums". The two animals are quite unrelated. Possums belong to the family Phalangeridae, while opossums belong to the order Didelphimorphia. In North America, the term 'opossum' is often shortened to 'possum', but the animals remain quite different species. There are no true possums in America.
If the question refers to "opossums", opossums are omnivores and will eat both animal and vegetable matter. They are also predators of other animals like birds, lizards, rodents and even tortoises if they are small enough for the opossum to kill.
How long can a turtle live when it is upside down?
They don't, at least not immediately. But if placed on their back they often can't flip themselves back, and since they can't move they'll eventually die of starvation, dehydration, exposure or after being attacked by some other animal.

No, exotic animals are wild. That means they are not very tame and may be aggressive as they are used to the hard life in the wild. Also, many exotic pets die in captivity, so help them by not supporting the exotic animal market! :)

Where do baby turtles go for the winter?
They crawl onto the backs of Canadian geese while they are feeding in the fall before migration. The geese actually benefit from this symbiotic relationship because the baby turtles eat the ticks off of the goose's body. Thus resulting in healthier flight endurance, because the ticks are parasitic and greatly reduce blood flow, ultimately this can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

What if you find a turtle in your backyard?
That depends on what type of turtle you found. Some turtles (such as snapping turtles) are dangerous and probably shouldn't be handled. Others (such as red-eared sliders) are harmless and make decent pets. Make sure you know what kind of turtle you have and what will be required for you to take care of it. In most cases it's better to leave wild animals in their natural habitat. They are happier there. red eared sliders have a a yellow bellie and a red stripe where their ear should be, if it has a yellow belly and not the red ear, it is most likely a yellow bellie slider both are good pets, if it doesn't meet that descripion then you should definitely not keep it. If it does you might not want to keep it though, it might have parents who will be very sad if they lost their child. Think twice before plucking one out of your pond and calling it your pet.
Turtles, snails, crabs, clams, oysters, shrimp, mussels, and eggs have shells because the creature can't protect themselves and Tom Fernanders otherwise many predators would simply attack the animal and eat it.
