In my experience, turtles sleep mostly at night. I've raised and cared for Red Eared sliders, a Mississippi map, reeves turtle, Asian yellow pond turtle, and a few box turtles when I was a child. They all slept at night, although they all liked to sleep differently. For instance the map turtle ( still have) likes to sleep underwater on things that are centimeters from the waters surface. The turtles species and the individuals that I've encountered were nightsleepers.

Now an addendum to this! Turtles and Tortoises are very dyanamic creatures. They get their sleep when they need to. It seems somtimes that some of the calmer aquatic species like the Sliders and Asian pond Turtles can go into a trance while basking. I don't think a wild caught specimen would do this! Pretty much most aquatic turtles dart into the drink at the slightest suspition of danger. I this is some help.

For the health of your box turtle, its always best to attempt any type of social housing with other box turtles and not mix species. Each species of animal can carry a level of parasites considered normal for them that will kill another species and vice versa.

Take it to the vet right a away... you never know what it could be. A tumour maybe... Personally I would take it to the vet as soon as I could. Please take it to the vets. In one story, Anansi was very hungry and turtle was near the river having lunch. He told turtle he should wash his hands before eating. So turtle went down to the river to wash his hands, but since turtles walk on all four he got his hands dirty coming back up the path. So Anansi told him to go wash his hands again. When turtle got back Anansi had already eaten all of his food.

But every were around the world there are turtle rescue teams that save wild turtles that are sick,and some look for endangered turtles and take them to a safer home.

When you have a new turtle and he is shy you can befriend him through his belly :). Some turtle treats you can use are cooked chicken or hard boiled eggs. I recommend cooked chicken because it is easier to hold in water. Rip the chicken into 1 inch long strips a little less wide than your turtles head. Hold a piece in the water near the turtle but don't press it on him. Let him come up to the chicken and bite it, once he bites it he may turn away but he will come back. Next time he comes around let him eat it, offer him another piece the same way. Try not to follow him around with it because he will think that you are chasing him. Through this gentle process your turtle will learn to associate you with food and that will make him your friend! Just don't give your turtle cooked chicken everyday, maybe every week or so. Turtles will keep on eating even when they are full so when the skin at the top of his legs bulges out of his shell don't give him anymore. Good luck with your turtle!

A turtle's poo is circular in shape, like a small cylinder, and can sometimes be quite long and stringy like a worm, depending on the consistency of the food that the turtle has consumed.

There's no reason you can't hold a red-eared slider, as long as you are careful. Red-eared sliders can sometimes carry salmonella, so you should always wash your hands after touching them. They can also get sick from germs that humans carry, so you should also wash your hands before touching them, too.

The other thing is that sometimes they bite, and it really hurts because once they've bitten you, they usually won't let go, so you have to pull your finger out. So be careful not to let your fingers get too close to its mouth.

i'd rather not it probaly cant protect itself that good. it is old so things can easily eat or kill it.same for younger turtles.

No turtles do not eat their own eggs that would totally destroy the point of going through that trouble to lay them in the first place.

Well my turtle laid her egg this morning then ate it like 45 mins. later and I dont understand or know why !

The short answer is that although all three are considered reptiles, turtles are outside of the group that includes crocodiles and dinosaurs. This is due in part to the fact that they possess no holes in their skulls behind their eyes, this is called the anapsid condition. Dinosaurs and crocodiles are both diapsid reptiles and have 2 holes behind their eyes. This feature is also found in lizards and snakes. Dinosaurs and crocodiles are also archosaurs, which is a large group of mostly extinct reptiles that includes the ancestors of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodiles and many other interesting animals. Only crocodylians and birds (which are living theropod dinosaurs) survive now.

So although crocodiles and dinosaurs are related more closely to each other than either is to other reptiles such as lizards or snakes, they are still two very different types of animal.
Major differences include specializations in the skull and postcranial skeleton that separate the two. The ancestors of crocodiles however, were very "dinosaur-like" and walked fully upright, many bipedally (or on 2 legs).

Do you mean scratch around the sides of their enclosure? If you do this is because they are trying to digg, and if you do not not have enough substrate in the enclosure for them to do so, it will sound as if they are scratching.

The male turtle will have a thick tail and it will be much longer than the females extending padt the shell. The female tail will be really short and won't go past the carapace most of the time. Also the males have slightly concave bellies while the females will be flat.

Miniature turtle? That doesn't really tell us anything about the species...there is no such type of turtle as a "miniature turtle". Turtle species all have very unique needs. My advice is to find a reptile forum and ask your questions there, and perhaps include photos so that you may identify its species and care for it properly.
