How do you tell if you have a male or female turtle?
A turtles color spots and the numbers of colors they have have NOTHING to do with it. Males generally have long skinny tails and females short fat tails. Males also grow really long front nails. But most female turtles grow larger than the males.
Tortoises do not shed their shells because the shell is part of their body. With proper UVB lighting the shell will grow normally and adjust to the tortoises size.

I know Red Eared Slider Turtles do that before mating. Males do it to females.

How do you find out what type of species of turtle you have?
Research. If you found the turtle your local library should have books of animals that are common in your area. You can call your local pet shop and ask them if they have someone who is knowledgable about turtles. If so, ask them if you can bring your turtle and have them look at it. If you can't transport it try a picture.
