They don`t acually have to know eachother. When my cat mated, a male cat just turned up, I had never seen it before, and they mated out in the garden. If two different gender cats have been together for a long time and they`re both adults without mating, they or one of them might be sterilized. If not I dont know why they would wait.

Heat cycles in females can last from several days to two weeks or longer, and repeat every two to three weeks. A female left unspayed and left to roam outside or manages to escape will seek out a male and may not return home for several days or weeks.
