Under trees, bushes, onMilkweed,in the grass. Pratically anywhere that's outside nature life like,but more likely to be near or on a tree and on Milkweed.

Wooly bear caterpillars are the furry ones. Keep them in a container with holes cut in th top so they can breath, and put 1to 2 inches of soil in and fresh leaves every other day. From an expert!

Metamorphosis .

Last year I decided to "raise" a few Monarchs. I was determined to watch them morph into their shiny green chrysalis. I had them in my daughters bug barn and went so far as to take them to work with me so I wouldn't miss the event. One morning I noticed one of the caterpillars doing this odd kind of shaking "dance". I had to go to lunch and left them on my desk until I returned. I returned 45 minutes later to see that it had completely morphed into its beautiful green shiny home. Since I had 2 more that hadn't changed yet, I didn't take my eyes off of them when I saw them do their "dance". I was fortunate enough to take in a beautiful transformation. It's something I think everyone should see, really! Watching it happen before your eyes and seeing how it loosens itself from its outer skin (that's what the dancing turned out to be) and transforms into the chrysalis is mind boggling. I hope you have the chance to catch it for yourself!

Generally speaking, the majority of caterpillars pose no risk. The ones with hind projections such as the horns at the tail of hawkmoth caterpillars do not sting in any way. Some caterpillars do have urticating spines that could raise water blisters if you brushed them along the inside of your arm.

but be careful while holding them Rough handling or squeezing any caterpillars might be detrimental to the caterpillars and those individuals might not form chrysalids and produce adult butterflies.

We come across a caterpillar with the stick insects at work so we kept it to see what would happen it turned into a cocoon it was weaved itself on to a leaf I touched the coccon and it wiggled each time so in my experience touch it hope this helps :)

It is best to let butterflies go when they have bee caught. They are very delicate insects and their wings break very easily. The butterflies wings are made up of tiny scales and touching them can cause a lot of damage to the structure. It is therefore best to leave the butterfly alone in its natural environment, and release one when it has been caught.

But if you want to keep it [only for a day,tops] I would get a pickle jar,a big one, then poke holes in the lid so it is able to breathe,then put a few flowers in the bottom of the jar. Try to make the jar the image of were you found it. But, it is best to let the butterfly go once caught.

There is one caterpillar that was thought to be poisonous but it is now been said to just have a pretty bad allergic reaction in a lot of people it is the White Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar it is native to canada and is making its way more into wisconsin but it is said to cause a burning itchy rash like stinging nettles (itch weed) does other than that I don't think there are any other poisonous caterpillars in Wisconsin but I advise to always identify any insect before handling it in any way

It is an American Dagger Moth. Some People say they can sting. I have one, and its living in its own silk.

To remove caterpillars without harming them try spraying them away with the garden hose or pick them off by hand. Mix together a teaspoon of dish soap with a half a gallon of water and spray on plants to keep caterpillars from coming back.

The egg shell contains vital nutrients for the caterpillar and help give it a jump start.
