What is a DVD video PAL movie?

It's a DVD video in the NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) video format (analog TV) which is 525 lines of resolution.

Can i burn DVD with a CD-writer?

It depends on the actual type of DVDR drive you have.

Most will say either DVD-R or DVD+R. If it is a modern drive, it's likely to say DVD+-R.

Basically, you need disc types that match the '+' or '-' you have.

If you have a DVD-R drive, you need DVD-R discs

If you have a DVD+R drive, you need DVD+R discs

If you have a DVD+-R drive, you can use either!

How do you erase dvdrw?

DVD + RW means that the disc is readable and writable, so you can write, delete, and re-write information onto it. To erase the information on a disc, pop it into a computer's optical disc drive and (on more recent versions of Windows) wait for the Auto Play to run, otherwise, find the CD under 'My Computer' and open the contents of the disc. Once you have that open, you are free to modify the contents of the disc as you choose.

If you like, Windows Media Player also has burning/ripping features that should do the trick for most users.

What are the similarity between a DVD-R and a DVD-RW?

Hard disk: It is common for the hard disk in a desktop computer store 500 GB of data or more. Access to the data on a hard disk is very fast.

A DVD looks much the same as a CD. A single sided, single layer DVD can hold up to 4.7 GB on one side. In contrast, a dual-layer DVD can carry two layer of data on each of its two sides: this means it can hold up to 18 GB of video, audio or other information.

How can you eject a DVD from a mac book that does not start?

With the computer off, hold down the mouse button and turn it on. Keep holding the mouse button until the CD ejects. If the CD does not eject, the drive may be damaged.

Is a CD-ROM hardware or software?

A CD is neither hardware, nor software. A CD is media. A CD-ROM Drive is hardware.

Can you download music onto a blank DVD-R disc and play it in a DVD player?

Yes, you can, as long as you upload the music first.

It will depend on the capabilities of your car CD player. Some older ones do not recognise the CD-R discs or DVD-R.

If your car can actually play DVD's it is highly likely that it will be backward compatible for recordable CD's.

You may have to record the disk as a CD using WMA file format.

Check that your player can play MP3 files, then more tracks can be used in MP3 format.

What does a CD-ROM drive use to read the information on a disk?

A CD Contains Data in Tiny "Bumps" and "Lands"
  • The data on a compact disc (CD) is stored on the disc as a series of tiny, almost microscopic bumps and lands. Each of these bumps represent a piece of information, though no specific information is directly stored. Instead, the bump is an indicator of data, roughly equivalent to a "1" in binary code (the lands, or flat surfaces on the CD, are considered to be the "0" in binary). A CD's bumps are so tiny that each one is only one half of one millionth of a millimeter long, far too small for a human eye or mechanical device to detect, but large enough for a laser to read.

A Laser Reads the Bumps on a CD
  • When data is read from a CD, a laser directs an extremely fine stream of light onto the surface of the disc. The laser follows the data stream of bumps and lands from the inside center of the disc outward in a spiral direction, allowing the size and even the shape of a data CD to vary if needed. As the one millionth of a millimeter (one micron) wide laser light shines on the CD's data track, it reflects one pattern of light off of a bump and a different pattern off of a land area. The resulting reflections equate to a series of ones and zeros, or the binary language of computers. A special tracking system in the CD-ROM drive constantly monitors the laser and adjusts its path to ensure it follows the correct data path on the CD.

Light Sensors and Processors Interpret the Data
  • As the laser light is reflected off of the data stream in tiny bits of data (ones and zeros), the incoming reflection is measured by a light sensor and sent to a data processor in the CD-ROM drive. This processor interprets the ones and zeros to assemble bytes of data which can then be forwarded to the computer's main processor for interpretation. The computer interprets this data as it was originally written on the CD, whether as a complex computer program, a basic collection of files or even simple music. As technology progresses and processor speeds increase, the CD can be spun at higher and higher rates, allowing the data on the disc to be read and sent to the processor, interpreted and used more quickly.

How do you reuse DVD r disks?

No, once a DVD-R is burned (or even partly burned) there is no way to 'unburn' it for reuse.

Why are CD-ROM and DVD drives called optical drives?

It is called an optical drive because the mechanism for reading and writing information is optical (light) based - it uses lasers.

How many photos will a 4.7 DVD r hold?

as many photos as you can fit on 1.7 gigs..........

I looked at details on my Photo folder and most pictures are around 100kB, so you can fit approximately 10000 photos on a 1.7GB disc.

Is burning a DVD the same as writing a DVD?

Yes. DVD writers are capable of writing to ("burning") blank DVDs, and CDs

as well.

However, you cannot use a CD burner to burn a DVD, and in some cases read it.

Here's the chain of command:

  1. Blu-ray

    burner - burns to Blu-ray

    discs, DVDs and CDs

  2. DVD burner - Burns to DVDs and CDs
  3. CD burner - burns only to CDs
Hopefully that clears things up.

What was the first single released on CD?

According to Greg Milner's "Perfecting Sound Forever: An Aural History of Recorded Music" the first commercial music CD was Billy Joel's "52nd Street".

Which disk holds the most data DVD or CD-RW or Floppy or CD-R or CD-ROM?

DVD is the largest of the 'hard media' as:

  1. DVD 4.7GB / 9.5Gb (dual layer)
  2. CD 780 MB (largest currently available)
  3. Floppy: 320KB / 512KB / 1.2MB (Magnetic Media)

Hard Disk's (Magnetic Media) have much larger sizes, currently the largest produced single drive is 2 TB (Terabyte: 2,000 Gigabyte - at the time of this answer). One 1 Terabyte drive equals 425.53 4.7 GB DVD's.

Please note that this does not include "Server" or "NAS" storage solutions that simply combine multiple drives into a single access point (Datacenter) - those are virtually unlimited in size (limited only by how much storage you can afford to add to the unit).

Currently the whole history of everything in all languages of the Human Race is estimated to be 50 Petabyte's; the largest (known) datacenter in the world is Teradata, Database 12 at 50 Petabytes. (1 Petabyte = 1,024 Terabytes == 1,048,676 Gigabytes or 212,765.96 DVD's).

India is starting a server farm in which there is supposed to be 1 googlebyte of storage possible which is a quintillion petabytes.

1 PB = 1024 TB

1TB = 1024 GB

1 GB = 1024 MB

1MB = 1024 KB

1 KB = 1024 Bytes

How is data stored on a CD-ROM?

Data is recorded onto a CD in a clockwise spiral from the center. Its recorded and read in a series of lands and pits. Any land that the laser hits is reflected to the read head and is recorded as a 1 or a 0. They are counted in groups of 14 and then converted into standard 8-digit data.

A CD is built from a plastic (polycarbonate) substrate and a fine, reflective metallic film (24-carat gold or a silver alloy). The reflective layer is then covered with an anti-UV acrylic finish, creating a protective surface for data. Finally, an additional layer may be added so that data can be written on the other side of the CD as well.

The reflective layer contains tiny bumps. When the laser passes over the polycarbonate substrate, light is reflected off the reflective surface, but when the laser reaches a bump, that's what allows it to encode information.

This information is stored in 22188 tracks engraved in grooves (though it's actually just one track spiralling inward).

Commercially purchased CDs have already been pressed, meaning that the bumps have been created used plastic injected into a mold which contains the desired pattern in reverse. A metallic layer is then affixed onto the polycarbonate substrate, and this layer is itself covered with a protective coating.

Is there any free DVD clone software?

There are many types of DVD cloner software available on the internet. This includes DVDCatalyst, HandBrake, WinXDVD and DVDfab. However, they will not be as good as some of the paid editions and cannot process some files. An example is that DVDCatalyst cannot correctly clone Disney DVD's.

When were cds first made?

Compact Discs were first available for purchase in 1982. The first ones were produced by Sony and today are produced by various other companies, and have been revamped from the orignal to hold more data and add other features as well.

How do you destroy a DVD or CD?

Put it in the microwave.... commonly used by people in the military to destroy electronic documents... It won't hurt your microwave either,

They are just made (mostly) of thin plastic, so you can break them fairly easily if that is what you want to do. If you are trying to avoid destroying them, I recommend that you keep them dry. Water can damage them. Don't store them in direct sunlight, either.

Do CDs work on DVD players?

Yes. DVD players can play music CDs. Blu-Ray players can also play DVDs and music CDs as well

Can you overwrite a recordable CD?

Technically, no - it needs to be a rewritable (RW) rather than recordable (R) disk. However, if you want to erase files because you want to get rid of the disk and have it recycled rather than destroying it, it may be possible to overwrite the files that already on there with something innocuous (like a PDF file of a book), provided the disk hasn't been closed after writing.

What is the diff between CD and DVD?

CDs were made earlier than DVDs. CDs were a new version of the very old black disks. DVDs were invented later, DVDs are put in a rectangler box because it was an earlier version of a video tape.

Why do CDs go out of print?

Depending on the type of material on it, the marketable shelf-life of the CD may be rather limited. For instance, an artist that was popular in the 1980s may no longer be particularly popular in the 2000s. Original albums may be pulled so that they can be released later as part of an anniversary, greatest hits, or special collector's edition version.

For software CDs, the shelf-life is even more limited. Very few people would want a copy of the 1993 version of the Microsoft Works suite, for instance. When the software contained on them becomes obsolete and/or unusable on newer computers, it makes no commercial sense to continue their manufacture.

Why DVD sales are declining?

There are three factors which hurt DVD sales:

The affluent households nearly all have HBO and other premium movie channels

Internet sharing of copyrighted material

Netflix offering on-line real time viewing for far less money than a DVD
