This question may be old but if you still don't know. Slave basically means like a second drive. One that doesn't need an os and is just put in your pc as secondary storage. Your primary or master hdd is the one you boot or post from and has windows installed. This is just the basics there is a little more to it.

The firm answer is "It depends". Regardless of the age of the cd rom drive the determining factor is "format". For CDs there are many, there are (without the quotes) "+R", "+RW", "-R", and "-RW". Yes the + and the - signs are there on purpose. A drive that can read/burn in +R can read +R and -R, and +RW and -RW. a drive that can read/burn in -R or -RW, can ONLY read -R and -RW.

If you look at your CD, somewhere on the label (and somewhere on the player usually) it will say if it's a + or - R. So if your drive is a CD-RW +R (or +RW) it can read either format. If it's a CD-RW -R (or -RW) it can only read other disks that are -R (or -RW).

The -R format has kind of fallen by the wayside because the +R is so much more 'universal'. But there are many many burners out there that write and read only -R.

Do One Thing. Try Any Freeware Software like Dban Or Killdisk. You Have To Create A Bootable CD Out Of It And Run The CD On Your PC. If The Computer Does Not Display "Boot From CD Or DVD" At Boot, Then Go In The Advanced BIOS Features In Your BIOS And Change The Boot Priority Setting As :-

1. Floppy / CD Or DVD

2. CD Or DVD / Floppy

3. Hard Disk

A compact disc is a CD. Therefore a DVD is not a compact disc. DVD is digital video disc.

CD-ROM is also a piece of hardware. Not a physical disc.

- CD-R (Recordable CD. You can copy things to it ONCE)
- CD-RW (Rewritable Disc. This is a CD that you can re-write over data currently on it.)

A region free player means you can also watch the dvds originally released in other regions. Some players are region free but it it sometimes possible to modify a player to make it region free
