What does ROM stand for in CD-ROM?
ROM = Read Only Memory. Though a CD-R can be written to, generally, it's only once. Then the CD can only be read and being a form of memory, can be called ROM or CDROM when applied to a CD. All music CDs are basically ROM. Even an LP record could be considered a form of ROM as its content cannot be changed. But in general, ROM refers to electronic devices. Any memory device which can only be read from, and not written to and thus altering it's content would be considered ROM. Computers also have several other uses for ROM. The computer's BIOS is stored in ROM. Most peripherals like CD drives, hard drives, and video cards also have microprocessors which need software to run. ROM is what they store their software needed to operate. One variant is called Flash memory or FlashRAM. This is a special type of memory which can be written to and changed, but otherwise remembers its contents and acts like ROM unless its contents need to be changed. In strict terms, ROM cannot have it's contents changed and can only have data read from and is thus a form of permament storage. CD ROM = Compact Disc Read Only Memory.
How can you burn things from a computer to DVD so they play on an ordinary DVD player?
On a Mac you would use the iDVD application to create and burn your DVD. When you launch iDVD selecting the Magic iDVD option makes the job a simple drag and drop operation. Choose a theme, drag your movies and photos and music (from the panel on the right) into the boxes, check your work with the Preview button and then Burn to disc.

What is a compact disc that uses the same laser technology as audio CD's for recording music?
I dont know the answer
The most common reason this happens is due to buffer under-runs. CD writing, and DVD writing ( burning ) is a very delicate process which requires high amounts of system resources. Running other programs actively such as browsing internet, or having other idle programs in the taskbar running can greatly depreciate your resources, depending on your system. Your software reads ahead of the burn, and creates whats called a buffer. If the system becomes busy while burning, the data is used in the buffer. Similar to the operation of a skip-free CD player reading 5 seconds ahead so that there is continuous playing when it receives a bump. If the system is busy for too long, and the buffer runs out, this is called a buffer under run, and can damage the functionality of the CD/DVD.
Closing all programs, and not using your PC during the burn should help. Be advised, that depending on your systems specifications, even an intense screen saver could eat up memory that the burn process could be using.

You might be getting mixed up with a CD but if you are using a DVD then that will not work. You can only put music on a CD. If you are using a CD then get a programme which will "burn" your CD (itunes will do that) and when your music is on your laptop go onto the program and burn it onto a new CD.

Replicated CDs are mass-produced initially using a hydraulic press. Small granules of raw polycarbonate plastic are fed into the press while under heat. A screw forces the liquified plastic into the mould cavity. The mould closes with a metal stamper in contact with the disc surface. The plastic is allowed to cool and harden. Once opened, the disc substrate is removed from the mould by a robotic arm, and a 15 mm diameter center hole (called a stacking ring) is removed. The cycle time, the time it takes to "stamp" one CD, is usually 2-3 seconds. This method produces the clear plastic blank part of the disc. After the metallic layer is applied to the clear blank substrate, the disc goes under a UV light for drying and it is ready to go to press. To press the CD, first a glass master is cut using a high-power laser on a device similar to a CD writer. This glass master is a positive master. After testing, it is used to make a die by pressing it against a metal disc. The die then becomes a negative image: a number of them can be made depending on the number of pressing mills that are to be running off copies of the final CD. The die then goes into the press and the image is pressed onto the blank CD, leaving a final positive image on the disc. A small circle of lacquer is then applied as a ring around the center of the disc, and a fast spin spreads it evenly over the surface. The disc can then be printed and packed.
