Children are inexpensive labor and they are small so, depending on the industry, they would be given jobs that require small hands or bodies that can move quickly. What little money they made was usually given to their parents or guardians.
In some foreign countries children are still used as labor due to the fact that they are inexpensive, but their families could use the money.
