What cochlear implant manufacturer makes the best implant and processor?

First Answer:

My otologist tells me that of three main manufacturers, Cochlear, Advanced Bionics, and Med-El, there are some differences but no definitive "one best" company.

Med-El is the newest manufacturer, and may be the most advanced in some respects. I think Cochlear may be the oldest company and has sold the most implants. The Cochlear "Nucleus Freedom" has a water-resistant external processor, as does (I think) the Advanced Bionics Harmony. The Med-El Sonata TI100 system currently offers the smallest implant size and also has the longest electrode array, which may be an advantage for some patients. Some CI's (Advanced Bionics' Harmony) offer rechargeable battery technology.

Advanced Bionics is a U.S. company, Med-El is an Austria, and Cochlear is from Australia. CI technology is constantly changing and improving. All three manufacturers are currently quite competitive. Whichever company is chosen, it is a safe bet that support will be available for the lifetime of the patient.

Second Answerer:

One should be aware that the latest entry of any cochlear implant manufacturer is MST, from south Korea.I am implanting this implant(ies-250) in India and found it to be superior to the other available ones as it involves a much less traumatic surgical approach, it is a short insertion electrode and does not damage neural elements and so preserving all residual hearing which could be helpful for future technologies, and most of all it comes with a less than half the price tag than the others!!

What is the difference between an ape and monkey skeletal parts?

While apes and monkeys are both primates, and are part of the same primate suborder, there are lots of differences between them. There are also lots of other sorts of primates. The distinction between different primate groups is based on physical characteristics and evolutionary ancestry.

The order of primates is characterized by animals with forward-facing eyes and highly flexible arms, legs and fingers. This body structure evolved as an adaptation for life in the trees: Primates have flexible limbs and grasping hands so they can move from branch to branch. The forward-facing eyes are also an adaptation for life in this environment: They give primates excellent depth perception, allowing them to accurately judge the distance between trees.

The 235 modern primate species are divided up into two suborders -- the prosimians and the anthropoids. The prosimians, made up of lemurs and similar animals, are the more primitive group. They exhibit lower intelligence and they more closely resemble other mammal groups (they typically have whiskers and extended snouts, for example). The prosimians split off from the evolutionary line leading to humans relatively early. Anthropoids, commonly called the "higher primates," comprise the rest of the species in the primate order. Anthropoids vary considerably in size, geographical range and behavior, but they all have flat faces, small ears and relatively large, complex brains.

Within the suborder of anthropoids, primates are grouped into monkeys, apes and hominids. The easiest way to distinguish monkeys from the other anthropoids is to look for a tail. Most monkey species have tails, but no apes or hominids do. Monkeys are much more like other mammals than apes and humans are. For example, most monkeys cannot swing from branch to branch, as apes and humans can, because their shoulder bones have a different structure. Instead, monkeys run along the tops of branches. Their skeletal structure is similar to a cat, dog or other four-footed animal, and they move in the same sort of way. On the evolutionary line leading to humans, monkeys split off long before apes did.

What kind of culture do non-human primates have?

Culture is defined as knowledge that is passed on from generation to generation. Therefore, non-human primates do have culture. Chimpanzees are a very good example because, just like humans living in different parts of world, different communities have different ways of doing things. Some Chimp communities use rocks as hammers and anvils to bust open nuts, others use twigs to fish for ants or termites. There is even a community that hunts with spears and cools off in caves! Another good example is the Japanese macaque (the light brown monkeys with pink faces that are often photographed lounging in hot springs). They became famous during the 1950s when one female was observed washing a sweet potato in water. This technique eventually caught on as new innovations are usually adopted by the younger generations and passed on to their own children later--this is an important point that can't be stressed enough. Some years later, one of these macaques started washing their potato in salty sea water. This is a common practice today because they apparently like salt just as much as humans do.

A paper published in 2007, "4,300-Year-old chimpanzee sites and the origins of percussive stone technology," found that Chimpanzees have been using stone tools for at least 4 millennia. Tool use probably goes back much further than this. Man was thought to be the only one capable of using tools until researchers in the 1960s first witnessed Chimps using stone anvils. (Such tool use was actually recorded as far back as the 16th century but forgotten. See "Reports of Chimpanzee Natural History, Including Tool Use, in 16th- and 17th-Century Sierra Leone"). So if both man and Chimps, our closest living genetic cousin, both use tools, our common ancestor who lived around 7 million years ago most likely used tools as well.

A good book for learning the difference between a Chimp's genetically engrained behavior and behavior that is learned (i.e. culture) is Prof. Frans de Waal's _The Ape and the Sushi Master_ (2001).

5 ways we can keep our ears healthy?

Protect ears in the workplace from loud noise and dust with protective ear wear.

Protect ears from loud noise at concerts, nightclubs and from personal stereos or

MP3 players with earplugs or by taking regular breaks from the music.

Discomfort in the ears while flying is almost universal. However this can be

alleviated a number of ways including chewing gum, swallowing water or yawning while landing.

To keep your ears clean, wash the visible part of the ear and behind the ear with slightly soapy fingers. Then wipe the soap away with rinsed fingers and dry with a thin towel. Do not poke the corner of the towel or flannel into the entrance to the ear canal.

Don't put anything smaller than your elbow down your ear! This old adage should still be adhered to, and people should not try to remove wax using a cotton bud. The ear canal has a self-cleaning action. Some wax may appear on a cotton bud if one is used to clean the ear, but the majority of the wax will have been pushed from its normal position, backwards down the ear canal.

Rinse hair in fresh water when bathing. Lying down to rinse hair can cause an infection to develop as there are always body bacteria in the bath water and these can become trapped behind any wax in the ear canal.
