Why are people so addicted to cigarettes?

Nicotine is used in the making of cigarettes and most people use it as a depressant. It also causes the release of natural chemicals in our brain called beta-endorphins. These chemicals cause us to feel more alert and calm. The problem is that nicotine isn't stored in the body so these effects last only a few minutes. We need to absorb more and more nicotine to make the effects last. because of nicotine, a drug that makes your brain think that it needs more through physical dependence (that's when you get other side effects when you don't smoke).

How much 1 pack of cigarettes cost in 1966?

I had not started smoking yet, started in 1979 after I graduated HS, and I was working

at a Gas Station, I think Cigarettes were about $1.50 - $2.00 / pack for Marlboro.

When I paid $3.00 a pack I quit that was about 10 years ago. Hope everyone quits..

Why give all that money to greedy government or to the cigarette companies.

Not to mention your own health care issues involved.

I started smoking in 1977 and cigarettes were .50 cents per pack on the Air force base. Off base they were .65 cents.

How much does a carton of camel cigarettes cost in Pennsylvania?

Depends on the brand. I buy the cheapies and they are about $4.75 a pack. Premiums are about $6. I live in the city of Philadelphia, and the tax is higher. If you can, you are better off buying cartons in Delaware. I'm currently visiting my folks in Washington State, and the cheapies here are $6.75/pk. Premiums are $8.25/pk. So I guess we Pennsylvanians should stop complaining about the cost! LOL!

What part of the a cigarette causes cancer?

Multiple things; mostly the chemicals that are added by the tobacco companies to enhance their products. Plus the fact when you inhale anything into your lungs you irritate them - causing damage.

How many chemicals in cigarettes and cigars are known or suspected to cause cancer?

Approximately 43 known cancer causing elements can be found in cigarettes.

Pesticides, heavy-alloy-metals and chemicals contain a lot of different cancer causing substances.

****

As a scientist, you have to ask how did these 'nasties' get into cigarettes.

Now pesticides are not only used on tobacco, they are used on the plants we eat. (Pesticides made from tobacco are approved for organic farming!)

Heavy metals (not alloys!), like cadmium, mercury, lead, polonium-210 and arsenic, occur naturally and are absorbed by ALL plants from the earth and atmosphere.

Many are produced in the combustion but they are also produced when you throw another log on the fire, fire up the gas or oil-fired central heating, have a BBQ, light a candle, etc.

Some are tobacco specific but very little research, if any, on those specific to apples, carrots, etc has been performed.

The vast majority of additives to tobacco are approved additives to foods and drinks.

A study found 19 carcinogens in a cup of coffee - without the state of the art equipment and billions of dollars of funding that Tobacco Control has.

Either all those nasties in Tobacco are deliberate scaremongering propaganda or we're ALL doomed!

Is smoking weed healthier than smoking cigarettes?

Actually, one cigarette takes 7 minutes off your life... or so THEY say. Also it is a proven fact that smoking weed is better for you. That's mainly because weed is a natural herb. In cigarettes you have to smoke through all kinds of chemicals to get to the tobacco. Plus there's no nicotine in weed or any other addictive substance. If that wasn't enough you should also consider if weed is SO bad for you then why do they give it as a "cure" to cancer and glaucoma, etc.

What is the best ways to quit smoking without using the patch or the gum?

There are various inhalers that are more like smoking, but they doesn't taste good (But then cigarette smoke does not actually taste good either, it is just that a smoker is used to the taste.) The disadvantage of this is that you are still carrying out the actions of smoking, so are not really "breaking the habit".

The best alternative is to just stop (Cold turkey.)

The worst symptoms will only last 1-3 days. After this what you really miss is the "actions" of smoking, rather than the drug.

On the plus side in a bout a week you will/may start to notice positive effects, warm feet, easier/quieter breathing, improved sense of smell to name but a few.

There are also a number of drug therapies available, but they tend to only be available on prescription.

Alternate Answer

There are more smoking cessation products available in the market besides patches and gum. If it is really tough for you to quit smoking then you can try for herbal cigarettes. Herbal cigarettes are the best possible solution to quit smoking. Whenever you feel to smoke that time you should try one cigarette, it contains very less nicotine in it which is not harmful. After using it for some days it will slowly reduce your number of cigarettes of a day and with in 1-2 months you can easily quit smoking.

Alternate Answer

You don't need anything to help you stop smoking. First of all, you "stop" smoking, you don't "quit". The word "quit" immediately implies that you are depriving yourself of something that you need. You are not. Instead of thinking "I need a cigarette", think "I'm so happy to be ridding my body of this poison that it doesn't need". That is the basic psychology behind it. Do not use any nicotine replacement products, you're just prolonging the misery for yourself.

Are herbal cigarettes safe?

No they are not, since they contain no tobacco, therefore no nicotine. However, inhaling any smoke is dangerous, and although herbal cigarettes do produce carbon monoxide, and tar, they are a far better alternative to traditional cigarettes. They contain various herbs ranging from bay leaves, to honey rose, and ginseng.
