No, Communism died simply because it was an unstable system. Under Communism, everyone was poor and wouldn't work much. The Soviet Union also never had a good leader.

However, I did hear that under Communism, it didn't allow for a powerful military. Not sure whether it's true or not though...

Did music have an impact on the cold war?

This is only my contemplation and is in no way fully correct. Western Europe and the U.S. were heavily influenced by music during the Cold War. On the other hand, the people of Eastern Europe looked on in envy. As the free world danced to the songs of The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and many other popular bands, Eastern Europe was largely devoid of meaningful music because powerful Russia did not allow Western culture to pervade into Eastern Europe. It can be safely said that because of the free and inspring music of Western Europe, the Soviets became increasingly paranoid that some of the communist countries may see that the grass is greener on the other side and convert to democracy.

Why did McCarthy initially receive a lot of support for his efforts to expose Communists?

It was the cold war, everyone was afraid of the USSR and "communism". In a true demagogic fashion, he exploited everyone's fears for personal gain. People went along with it either because they were afraid of communists, or too afraid to stand up to McCarthy, as they may be branded as unpatriotic. This is a common thing, just think of our cultural and political climate after 9/11.

What policy ensured that the cold war never escalated into a hot war between the two super powers?

The is no policy that can prevent a war. If one nation wants to fight someone, there will almost always be a way (reason or excuse) to start one. Just like people, if someone wants to start trouble...they can...regardless of rules (or laws).

The only policy during the cold war was the US Government's "First Strike" doctrine. The US military reserved the right to retaliate with chemical warfare weapons if the enemy used them first; the US military would not deploy bio weapons; but US doctrine called for FIRST STRIKE capabilities with nukes.

Translation: If there was going to be a nuclear war; the US was going to be the first to use atomic weapons. (To use an old western frontier adage, "to get the drop on the bad guy").

Where did the Diefenbunker get its name from?

'Diefenbunker' is a play on words.

During the Cold War, the Canadian government built an underground bunker near Carp, Ontario, a few kilometers outside of the nation's Capital, Ottawa. In the event of nuclear war the Prime Minister and a handful of people necessary for the functioning of government during war would be safe from attack. Not surprisingly, after an untold amount of money had been spent on it, the bunker was determined to be virtually useless.

The "Diefen" part of the bunker comes from the surname of Canada's then Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker (1895-1979), who served in office from June 21, 1957 to April 22, 1963. The Prime Minister's toilet in the bunker came complete with rubber shock absorbers, so that it could withstand a nuclear bomb without cracking the porcelain.

The Diefenbunker is now a Cold War museum.
