My doctor wants to do a sigmoidoscopy in addition to a colonoscopy. Why not just the colonoscopy?
It's not in addition to, it's instead of. Reason, in addition to cost, is that the majority of polyps are found in the region covered by a sigmoidoscopy. If you have a history of colon cancer in your family, and are over age 40, I'd strongly argue for the colonoscopy.

No, the doctor will not give him Gatorade for preparing for a colonoscopy. Number of hours NPO for conscious sedation procedures eg colonoscopy?
As a consultant for a conscious sedation consulting firm, I receive this question often. The gold standard set by the American Society of Anesthesiologists is as follows: Summary of American Society of Anesthesiologists Preprocedure Fasting Guidelines2* Ingested Material Minimum Fasting Period†Clear liquids‡ 2 h Breast milk 4 h Infant formula 6 h Nonhuman milk§ 6 h Light meal 6 h * These recommendations apply to healthy patients who are undergoing elective procedures. They are not intended for women in labor. Following the Guidelines does not guarantee a complete gastric emptying has occurred. †The fasting periods apply to all ages. ‡ Examples of clear liquids include water, fruit juices without pulp, carbonated beverages, clear tea, and black coffee. § Since nonhuman milk is similar to solids in gastric emptying time, the amount ingested must be considered when determining an appropriate fasting period. A light meal typically consists of toast and clear liquids. Meals that include fried or fatty foods or meat may prolong gastric emptying time. Both the amount and type of foods ingested must be considered when determining an appropriate fasting period. PRACTICE GUIDELINES 1007 Anesthesiology, V 96, No 4, Apr 2002

What health problems can Polyurethane cause?
HANDLING POLYURETHANE FOAM SAFELY
1. Polyurethane foam is a by- product of the same process that is used to make
petroleum. It is highly flammable.
2. Polyurethane foam ignites easily and burns rapidly. It should be kept away
open flames and sparks.
3.When it burns, polyurethane releases a great amount of heat and toxic
fumes.
4. Burning polyurethane can cause suffocation in a poorly ventilated area.
5. Polyfunctional isocyanate and polyester polyol should be handled with
gloves.
6. DO NOT INGEST THE POLYURETHANE FOAM - some foams have
flame retardant additives that can be toxic if ingested. Whether or not
the foam you are working with contains them, it should not be ingested
or even placed in the mouth. (JUST LIKE ANY OTHER
CHEMICAL!)
