Christopher Columbus was the first European to cross over the Atlantic ocean and document a new land. There were a few issues with his crossing. He thought, for example, he had landed in India. There are people that would diminish his contributions, but prior to the landing by Columbus, the known world had no idea that anything was west of the Ocean. He was a great man that was years ahead of his time.

There is some evidence that a few individuals came from Norway or other countries to the new land, but their discoveries were not documented and no trail of there crossing is recoverable. Columbus allowed the ability for Europeans to develop the new world. An awesome accomplishment, to say the least.

With regard to the fact that he represented the takeover of the Americas by European races, Columbus and all explorers were detrimental to the cultures of Native Americans.

However, the current nations that exist in North and South America would not exist, and the world would not have benefitted from them, if not for the pioneering voyages of Columbus.

I would say that around 50,000 died. Historians under the Tudors said things like "more Englishmen died in the WotR than the 100 Year's War." That's ridiculous. In the Hundred Year's War, 3 million people died.

Around the time of Galileo, there was a strong following of Catholicism in Europe. Galileo agreed with Copernicus that the Earth revolved around the sun instead of the Earth being the center of the universe (which is what the Catholics preached). Galileo also had a fan base, and whatever he said they believed. Since he agreed with Copernicus, the Pope threatened to torture him if he published his agreement and beliefs.

There are a ton of national holidays in the United states. If schools were closed for all of them, there would be no school. So, school districts pick the most important days to be closed and Columbus day doesn't make the cut fur most schools, especially when it has several negative connotations and a bit of a problematic history. Several states have changed it to indigenous peoples day.
