Communication

Communication is how we send messages to each other. It can be wordless, like body language. It can be written like a letter or message. It can also be spoken. Communication is very different from one situation to another.

When is it necessary to explain or make something clear?

Communication by language, either verbal or written, can be imprecise, because language represents the translation of a basic concept which is understood by each person in a slightly different way. A famous quotation is that no man is actually the master of a language, only one of its users.

Clarification, providing details, is often necessary when a concept can be explained in several ways, or where the same explanation can be used for many concepts.

For example, saying "I am going to eat" could mean that
-- you are leaving right now to get something to eat
-- you are planning to eat something eventually
-- you have decided to eat something rather than to drink something.

Why do you send a telegram?

Actually, these days, you don't. In their day (beginning in the late 1840s), telegrams were very important. In fact, the telegraph was considered an amazing invention, since it transmitted short messages by Morse code hundreds of miles away, often in less than an hour. In the world before the internet, sending and receiving a message in the same day was considered a miracle, since it had taken days to send information by horse (or even by train) prior to the arrival of the telegraph. By the late 1800s, the telegraph had become an essential means of communication. Journalists relied on it to send stories back to their newspaper. And members of the public were excited to receive a telegram, since it usually meant important news, like an upcoming wedding or the fact that a family member from a distant city was arriving soon (or sometimes, a message that someone had just died). Messages were charged by the word, and this meant information was now considered valuable and worth paying for.

But when technology improved (first radio, then TV, satellite, and finally the internet), the idea of sending messages by Morse code over telegraph wires lost its specialness. It was now much too slow to wait for a telegram, and there were many better and faster ways to send messages over long distances. One by one, telegraph companies went out of business and fewer people were receiving telegrams. For example, the Telegraph Service in India closed in July 2013: for more than 160 years, the telegraph was an important way to communicate in many parts of rural India. But in a world of smart-phones and instant messaging, few people seem eager to send or receive telegrams any more.

How do you write casual leave letter?

Requirements for requesting time off under a casual leave policy will vary by company. However, in most companies there is no need to write a letter. An email will be adequate. In the email, typically, you can address your manager the way you normally do in conversation, tell your manager that you need some times off, exactly when the time off will be, and request permission. Depending on the company and the manager, you might also want to give a reason that you need it, and refrain from making plans before you receive permission. In some places, the time off is almost a given, but in other situations it is very dependent on the needs of the department at the time.

How to write a thank you note to the landlord for giving you a break in the rent during the holiday season?

The only way to really thank a landlord is to always pay your rent on time and to treat the property with the same care as if it was your own. For a note, just a simple 'thank you', 'most appreciated' will suffice. If you wish to be more poetic, something like 'May the kindness of your generosity be visited upon you 100 fold in the coming year.'
