Anyway, the best answer is, essentially, there were a bunch of nerds and computer programmers who designed two totally different keyboard designs. While it doesn't say this, my guess would be one of them had the cent sign on it, while the other (the ancestor of the modern keyboard design) didn't. Since at the time the Army and military were the only people who used computers for the most part (this was while Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were probably still in 4th grade, maybe they weren't even born yet), they made the final decision: They picked the keyboard without the cent sign. There are ways to get it to show up. Since I'm on a Windows, I don't know how to do it on a Mac. There are codes for the ALT key, the key near the control key that seems totally useless. You need Character Map. To get to it:
Windows XP: Start -> all programs ->accessories -> system tools -> Character Map
Windows 7: Window button or windows key -> all programs ->accessories -> system tools -> Character Map
Select ARIAL font and you should find them. Click on the particular symbol, click on the copy button and you can then paste the symbol with Ctrl+C.

this happened to me on my dell mini laptop as well. it was fine the day before, and when i began typing the next morning all numbers showed up as symbols. i pressed the shift key once, then tried a number and the numbers all worked normally again. i did not hold shift, i just tapped it and then tried a number. all back to norma.
