Why won't cooking oil dissolve in water?

The two don't mix because oil is a lipid, which repels from water. The oil floats because it is less dense. Lipids are chains of carbon attached to hydrogen, so they are not polar and will not dissolve in water.

Why is it bad to use the same cooking oil more than once?

It's not. it's actually better. Food browns faster and tastes better in seasoned oil. Fast food joints filter their oil every night but only change it ever so often.

A different answer:

It is bad to use the same cooking oil over and over because the molecular chemistry of the oil changes over time. The smoking temperature of the oil becomes lower and the oil gives off polymers and polar compounds increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How long does it take to heat up cooking oil to 325 degrees?

Depends on what you are using as a heat source. A lighter may take a while, and the afterburner on the new F22 jet would be much faster. If you use a typical stove in your home it could be 20+ min. A restaurant burner has many more BTU's allowing it to speed the process up to 1/2 the time. It also depends on the amount of the oil needing to be heated since it takes more energy (heat) to raise the temperature of a large pot of oil than it does a small one. Pot size will affect the time too. A gallon of oil in a tall narrow soup kettle will take longer than the same amount of oil in a larger diameter shorter pan that has a larger surface area in close proximity to the heat source.

What is rapeseed?

No, canola oil comes from rapeseeds. According to AgriAlternatives, The Online Innovation, and Technology Magazine for Farmers, "By nature, these rapeseed oils, which have long been used to produce oils for industrial purposes, are... toxic to humans and other animals". Rapeseed oil is poisonous to living things and is an excellent insect repellent. Ask for it at your nursery. Rape is an oil that is used as a lubricant, fuel, soap and synthetic rubber base and as a illuminate for color pages in magazines.

US and Canadian farmers grow genetically engineered rapeseed and manufacturers use its oil (canola) in thousands of processed foods, with the blessings of Canadian and US government watchdog agencies. The canola supporting websites say that canola is safe to use. They admit it was developed from the rapeseed, but insist that through genetic engineering it is no longer rapeseed, but "canola" instead.

Is canola oil organic or inorganic?

Sunflower oil, like all oils, are organic compounds. An oil, by definition, is a chain of carbon molecules with mostly hydrogen atoms attached along the chain. In the case of sunflower oil, there are positions in which there are less hydrogen atoms attached because there is a double covalent bond in the carbon backbone, making sunflower oil an unsaturated oil.

How many times can you reuse deep frying cooking oil?

Vegetable oil used for frying does go through a process of oxidation. Plus, it picks up some of the flavors of whatever was previously fried in it. Vegetable oil is commonly reused in restaurants for deep-frying.

Can canola oil be sustituted for olive oil in salad dressings?

1 c water, 1 tbsp low sodium vegetable broth powder, 2 tbsp cornstarch. I havent tried it, but i found it on the web.

Another Response:

The previous answer should actually be struck from this, as it has no bearing on the subject.

Olive oil is more expensive than vegetable oil, but has many health benefits, and the olive flavor is blends well with salads. If you can not afford extra virgin olive oil for dressings, any vegetable oil will do.

Chemical formula for canola oil?

Sunflower oil is similar to olive oil by the fact that it is mainly fatty acids connected to a glycerol backbone. They all have CH2 in them, which is an important part. The CH2 is important (and there are usually other CH's... CH3 and CH) because it is the typical carbon bonding that you study with all carbon families: alkanes, cycloalkanes, alekenes...etc.

They are also lighter than water and at room temperature some fatty acids can be solid: such as butter...

As long as you know that all those oils (olive, sunflower...) are glycerides, and are mainly fatty acids, than that is all you really need to know. It is also important to recognize that it has the typical carbon bonding. The entire formula isn't that important.

yes this is right
