Put lots of climbing things like vines and plastic plants in the terrarium hermit crabs love climbing. Put huts and caves for shelter and a bowl of freshwater and a bowl of saltwater so that they con drink and fill their shells as needed. Do you need to change a hermit crab shell when it pees on you?

Haha, no. The signs that it needs to change is if it will not fit into its shell all of the way. (When its legs are mostly out)

Edit: Actually, Hermit crabs do not pee on you. That wetness you feel when you hold them in your hand is actually shell water that they carry around in their shell to keep their soft abdomen moist. If their abdomen dries out, they will die. This is why it is important to make sure they have a fresh (dechlorinated) water dish that is deep enough for them to submerge in to refill their shell water. They also need ocean/marine salt water, as they need to balance the salinity of their shell water and in their body. They can survive without it, but have to recycle their urine to maintain their body's saline (salt) balance.

Hermit crabs actually "pee" out of a gland at the base of their antennae.

Please also note that, unfortunately, salt water mixes sold specifically for hermit crabs do not have the nutrients they need to be healthy. Make sure you always give them an ocean or marine salt water mix, and mix according to package directions. Too strong and the salt can burn their gills, too weak and it won't give them the nutrients they need.

Does a crab have an outercovering of hair?

Crabs do have sensory hairs in many locations on their body but the characterization as a "covering" would be dubious, since the bulk of the surface area would be locally flat and shell-like chitin. There are creatures called yeti crabs (or yeti lobsters) with a very hairy or furry appearance on the forelegs and claws, but these may not be considered true crabs.

Can you use tap water to spray the hermit cage down?

You can use tap water but need to add a water conditioner t the tap water before spraying. This conditioner removes the chlorine from the water and is available at your local pet store. I prefer using distilled or purified water because it leaves less scale buildup on the inside of the tank glass.

What do crabs. Eat?

Crabs are 'carrion eaters', meaning they feast on what's left after a larger predator has its fill. Typically, they munch on pieces of dead fish or whatever else happens to wind up on the bay or ocean bottom, since that is where they live.

  • They are detrivores. They will consume animal as well as plant matter (algae, etc.). They will mostly live off plankton and other types of water plantation. They also eat some small fish in the wild, along with crayfish, barnacles, mussels, prawns and shrimp.
  • Crabs are opportunists. They will eat what they find, including partially decomposed items.
  • They also eat hatchling turtles.
  • Some species have been known to eat guano (bat droppings).

Different species of crabs eat different foods. Depending on the species, they may eat plankton, worms, shrimps, prawns and other shellfish, and they scavenge for animal and/or plant remains.

Crabs are opportunistic scavengers and will consume nearly edible thing they can grasp. Most crabs will readily small shrimp, including shrimp pellets, frozen mysis, etc. They will also eat dead fish and other animals.

Do hermit crabs need a heat rock?

While hermit crabs do need heat, a heat rock is not a very good solution. Hermit Crabs can and will overheat themselves on a heat rock. A heat rock can get up to 100+ degrees, which is WAY to hot for a hermit crab. A better solution is to use an under tank heater pad, and mount it on the side of the tank. 2 small pads covering a corner is even better.

You should make sure and have a cool side and warm side for your hermit crabs. Maintain about 80 degrees f on the warm side, and about 70 degrees f on the cool side and your hermit crab should be just fine. Keep the humidity at above 75% as well.
