Darvon and Darvocet

Darvon and Darcocet are analgesic painkillers used to treat post-operative and chronic pain. In 2010, these pills were banned in the US market primarily because of their adverse effect on the heart.

Is it okay to take Darvocet and Wellbutrin together?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Funny I should stumble upon this question. I have been taking Darvocet for approximately 3 years. I have a crooked spine which causes me daily back, neck and head pain. It's not bad enough yet for me to have surgery, but bad enough that I'm not benefiting from physical therapy. Therefore, Darvocet has been a life-saver for me.

I also suffer from mild "seasonal affective disorder". Around the beginning to middle of September (when the weather starts to get colder), I fall into a complete slump. Unable to get motivated, I feel like staying in bed all day. I also get rapid panic attacks at the onset of the changing of the seasons. Last year, my doctor prescribed Prozac for the S.A.D., and said that I could take it for the winter months and discontinue it once the fall and winter months were over. This worked wonders for me, and I continued using it until the end of April. The only downside to this was that I experienced a significantly decreased libido.

With fall rolling around again, I found myself back into the same slump as last year. I went to my doctor and asked him if there was something similar to Prozac that wouldn't affect my libido as much. He prescribed Lexapro. He did say that while this drug may also lower my libido, it shouldn't be as bad as the Prozac because the usual needed dosage is much lower.

I asked him how the Lexapro and Darvocet would mix, and he said that I shouldn't have a problem with the two as long as I'm not abusing either drug (i.e., taking too much Darvocet just to get "high". Which I don't.)

One of my main concerns with taking the Darvocet and an anti-depressant was the risk of "serotonin syndrome". It's when too much serotonin is released into the bloodstream, causing a whole range of unpleasant symptoms. I asked him about this as well, and he said that almost ALL of the cases of serotonin syndrome came from people who severely abuse medication, and that these two medications will not cause this when taken as directed.

I know I'm rambling, but I always like to read the detailed responses to questions when looking things up, so I tend to get pretty detailed with my answers.

The Lexapro so far has worked wonders for me as well, without the decreased libido. I've been taking it with the Darvocet and have had no umpleasant side effects. I hope the Lexapro works for you, too! Takes a few weeks, but it really does start to help...A LOT! Just take the Darvocet and Lexapro at prescribed levels and you should do just fine on it!

As far as I am concerned, my doctor has prescribed me anti-inflammatory (such as naproxen or ibuprofen) together with muscle relaxer (such as flexiril). Make sure the the dosage is not too high though. For example, I would take a 250mg naproxen (2 times/day) and 10 mg flexiril (3 times/day).

Yes, although first introduced for use for recovering heroin addicts, it is also prescribed for many other pain management or (painkilling) afflictions. It will also 'take the place of' or have the same affect as other medical drugs which are derived from opiates' such as Oxycontin, Morphine Sulfate, Loratab, ect., ect.

Does Darvocet contain codeine or hydrocodone?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, Darvocet* is a brand name* * for a propoxyphene compounded drug. It is a controlled substance, available legally only by prescription.

A lot of physicians just wont presecribe it at all because it is highly adictive. And many say that it just does not do the job, and that better products with fewer possible consequences are available. (Still it is a steady producer for Eli Lilly; all physicians are not in agreement.)

Propoxyphene is related to codeine and hydrocodone, but it is not the same.

*Darvocet is a product belonging to Eli Lilly and Company. It contains other substances than just propoxyphene; it comes in various doses, sizes and shapes. See the link discussing Darvocet and associates.

** Darvocet and several combinations are brand names of Eli Lilly. Propoxyphene is a generic drug; however, Darvocet is a particular product, with a particular shape, combination and packaging. Darvocet and its variations belongs to Eli Lilly and Company.

Can you take Darvocet with an anti-inflammatory drug?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. Darvocet is a pain relieving drug, not anti-inflammatory. Darvocet contains codeine, which is meant to relieve pain, not so much for inflammation. See if you can get some 800mg Motrin instead. Even for a pain reliever, Darvocet isn't very strong....seems to work well as a mild pain reliever for females though.

How many darvocet to get high?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Darvocet has been removed from the market in the United States due to toxicities caused by the active ingredients, even at commonly prescribed doses.

Patients with legitimate Darvocet prescriptions should contact their doctors to find an alternative.

Recreational Darvocet use without a prescription is to be discouraged. It is particularly damaging to the heart and liver, even at "normal" doses. As a drug of abuse and at higher doses, it is pure poison.

It burns worse than coke, meth or anything. And the burn doesn't go away for quite a while. I wouldn't recommend it unless you want that to be worse than the pain you have prior to snorting it.

What is the shelf life of the medication Darvocet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Studies have been done showing that many prescription medications can remain safe and effective for months or even years past their expiration dates, if the choice is between expired medication or no medication.

However, the safest practice is generally to throw away medicines on their expiration date, especially those that require refrigeration.

Here's the deal: you're talking about your health, here, and Darvocet has been pulled off the market in the US; perhaps it's time to get a new prescription for a drug that's still actually being sold?

Can you take one hydrocodone pill 6 hours after taking a Darvocet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hydrocodone is what is called a pure mu receptor agonist. This refers to certain morphine receptors in the brain. Darvocet is a partiaial agonist/antagonist, which means it can compete against many common narcotic analgesics. It is not advisable to combine the two as the darvocet can cause withdrawal symptoms inthose individuals habituated to pure mu agonists. In addition, darvocet has harmful metabolites that can cause serious side effects including siezures, with repeated administration. In my opinion, darvocet, darvon, and Demerol, are only suitable for pain relief for the short term. Their toxicity is such that the FDA is currently considering their removal from the market.

Can you take Darvocet ibuprofen and acetaminophen together?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Darvocet already has acetaminophen in it, so you definitely need to be careful how much other acetaminophen you are taking. The maximum dose you can safely take (and even this is pushing it) is 1000mg per 6 hours. The general rule is no more than 4000mg in a 24 hour period. Darvocet can contain up to 650mg per dose. So simply taking two Darvocet may already put you over the limit of your safe dose of acetaminophen.

It is safe to mix ibuprofen with acetaminophen based products. It is also safe to take ibuprofen with the propoxyphene which is the main ingredient in Darvocet.

What should I do if I added 1 quart too many to my stratus 3.0?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You could remove the oil filter and depending on size would probably have 1/2 qt in it. Drain the oil filter and replace it and then run the engine, shut it off and recheck your level. If you are still over you could do it again. Otherwise you will have to take out the drain plug and when you think you got a quart out try to get the plug back in but this is a lot messier and you have to be quick and lucky to hit it beofer all the oil comes out. Try the oil filter trick.
