Why did the Airbag light come on?

The light come on when the system detects a problem and sets a trouble code. You should have it diagnosed by a trained technician. The airbag system is not for do it yourselfers.

The light is on because there is a problem with the air bag system. When the air bag light is on the system is not working and will not deploy in the event of an accident. When the air bag light is on the system has set a code(s) in the computer A scanning device can retrieve the code(s). The code(s) will give you a clue where the problem is. Many auto parts stores will read the code(s) from your vehicles computer for zip if you purchase the parts necessary to repair the vehicle from them.

you have a false signal coming from the sensor harnes.

It means there is an issue with your airbag. You should have it diagnosed and repaired.

If the air bag light is coming on then you have a problem with the SRS. Seek professional help.

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.

Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool.

SRS ( supplement restraint system)if your light is on while driving, it means there is a malfunction in the system somewhere, which you should have checked

The light comes on because the airbag computer has detected a malfunction. You need to have the system checked for codes with a scan tool. You then need to have the cause repaired by a trained technician. The airbag system is not a safe place for do it you selfers.

Either the bags have been deployed or there is a problem with the computer/sensorzperiodz

If it's the computer/sensor the bags won't deploy. get this checked out!

AnswerIt is on because there is a problem with the SRS. Take it to a dealer for repair, immediately. Do not attempt to repair yourself. Serious injury can occur if not done correctly.

If the air bag light comes on and stays on it is telling you there is a problem with the system and the air bag(s) is disabled. Until the problem is fixed the light will remain on.

AnswerThere is no "reset" for an airbag system. The system checks itself each time the key is cycled on, and if it sees a problem, the air bag light is illumnated. The flashing you are seeing is actually a fail code being displayed. It is a two-digit code. The light will flash the first digit, then a short pause, then flash out the second digit, then there will be a long pause, and repeat. It does this three or four times, then comes on and stays on. If you have an airbag light on, you have a problem. Fix the problem, then the light will "reset" itself.

I disagree there is a reset for the airbag module, as I will explain, however, it is true that the system has detected some kind of fault. It is our experience, that (some times)even if you fix the problem the light may not turn off. For example, if the error somehow simulated a crash sequence the error code will be reflected in the control module and the light will not clear. You can however, with the right type of technology, clear even hard codes written to the module. We do this every day. See reset airbag module link

You need to go to a dealership or service station to have them look at this. If your air bag light is staying off after you've started your car (should illuminate for just a second or two), you need to have the system checked. Check the fuse chart in your manual. At least for '94 Dodge Caravan, if air bag light is on and the horn doesn't work, the problem is the clockspring. If the air bag light stays on and the rear window wiper doesn't work, it's fuse #13. Check this out before spending $$ at dealership.

Most of the time is caused by a bad clockspring or its connector for the air bag has come undone. It can be caused by a bad air bag cotrol unit, but this usually doesnt happen unless the bags have been deployed. Not always though. Hope this helps. It usually indicates a problem with the airbag system. It is NOT recommended to service the system. Have a professional do it.

When the clock spring breaks the air bag light stays on,the horn and cruse control don't work. This is a recall item on many models repaired at no cost to the owner.

How do you install an autometer tachometer on a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse and is it possible to connect through the coil-ignitor wires?

  • If you don't have a distributor on your car, you will need to get a tach adapter for your car. So that you can get an rpm signal from your car to the tachometer.
  • Hey dude, here's how to connect the green wire from your tachometer: Tach output is obtained from PCM (powertrain control module) which is a 104 wire connector, and is located behind the passenger side kick panel. Look for pin number 48, which is usually an orange wire with a white stripe.(4.6L is = 4 ppr)
  • Your best bet is to check out the autometer's web site which provides most all the information you might need. If you can't find the info email autometer tech support.
  • Go to test connector inside the fusebox under the hood, it is a t-shaped plug. Tach is the terminal on the top left of the T. The wire under the terminal is white or white/red.

How do you turn off the maintenance required light on a 2004 Fiat Punto 1.9 JTD?

Turning off the Maintenance Required Light on a CivicHere are answers and opinions from FAQ Farmers:
  • I have an '03 Civic and I have the REAL answer right here. There's a couple of steps to follow, so here we go: 1: put the key in the ignition. Don't turn the car on or turn it. 2: next to the odometer is that little knob for the trip OD. press that in and hold it.(you'll have to hold this for the entire rest of the process, so I hope you ate your Wheaties this morning) 3: now turn the key two clicks to the II position. (are you still holding the trip button down?..you had better be..) do not actually start the car. 4: keep holding the trip button down and leave the key at the II position until the maint req'd light goes out. 5: don't get all excited. Keep that trip button pushed down while you turn the key back two clicks back to off and take the key out. 6: Ok Ok, NOW you can let go of the button. All of you that answered before, your hearts are in the right place. But the Hondas have changed since the 90s. I had an old Accord, and yes it had the little button that you can push right on the dash. But the new Hondas are reset differently. As far as I know, the proceedure I gave just now will work with any Honda, not just the Civic.
  • I have a 02 civic and the only thing I did differently was start with the key in the #1 position.
  • I have a 05 civic and the process above worked like a charm. (Just wanted people to know that the process works on 05 civics too)
  • I have a '97 accord and on the dashpanel, by the mileage/tripomemter is a small black box like thing, the key for the car fits right in and resets the light. Look in your manual, it will say in there for sure or contact the dealer, they should know. I know the '97 accord light comes on after so many miles have passed, and most places that aren't the dealer do not reset it so it will come on and I usually reset it myself.
  • I have the same problem and although I haven't tried this yet, I read in another forum that you should press and hold the select/reset button; then turn the ignition on and hold until the light goes out (about 5 seconds).
  • It's easy to do. The instructions are in your manual (page 65). It's different for 4 and 6 cylinder models. I have a 6. Here's how to reset the 2003 6: 1) Put the key in the ignition without turning. 2) Press and hold the odomoter reset button. 3) Turn the ignition key to the on position without starting the car, continuing to hold the reset button. 4) Hold the reset button until the light goes out - approx. 10 seconds.
  • Take it to the auto parts or the dealer if it is not in your book and have them reset it with the computer, or disconnected your battery.
  • Disconnecting your battery for a few seconds is a quick and simple way to reset the trouble codes in the computer.
  • I have a 2000 Honda civic, all I do is use a pen or key and push in the the slot beside the maintenance light. Not sure if you have that but you just hold it down and it flips itself.
  • I was lookin for the owners manual in this customers car and couldn't find it but your directions worked for my customers 00 Civic 4 cylinder also. NOTE Disconecting the Battery does not work and will also not reset almost any light in Cars that are newer then 1996 from what i have found. (OBD2 Systems)
  • Attention, when you disconnect the battery you may reset the radio anti-theft code and if you don?t know it you get into more trouble.
  • Ok first off the battery disconnecting "thing" does work but you have to disconnect both terminals and touch them together for 10-15 seconds for it to work. And I seem to se alot of people just wanting to turn the maintenance light off, it says maintenance required i suggest you get your maintenance done, that's why it's there. And for any of the non-car type people out there if you take your car to any dealer they will tell you waht need to be done and why the light is on free of charge... at least i know i would at my dealership. It's not that hard. Oh and as for the radio lock code it is again a simple phone call away for any dealer and you should not be charged for it. If someone is telling you otherwise then you should ask for the service manager or shop forman and they will get it done for you.
  • The solution for the 2003 V6 did work, Thanks. The dealer stated at least for a 2003 Accord this light will reappear every 7500 miles.

What is a tachometer generator?

Tachometers are instruments which are used to determing the speed at which something is turning [usually measured/indicated in Revolutions per minute]. There are many different tachs that accomplish this in several different ways. The tach that uses a "generator" is basically a voltmeter for the "read out," and a generator that creates a small electrical output which when supplied to [and properly calibrated to] the read out voltmeter guage, gives an indication of the Rpm of the shaft to which the generator is attached.

How do you fix instrument panel lights?

Instrument panel lightsThey are on a fuse, however if the fuse goes all the instrument lights quit and usually your dome light. You have to pull the cover off on your panel. Most likely it is Phillips head screws or torx head like a T-20. You pull all those little screws off around the underside of the dash and down around your steering wheel sometimes it may also go around your the bottom side of the steering wheel just above your feet. The light generally just push in place in the socket. Auto zone or maybe even walmart may have the bulbs.

What could be wrong with a 2000 Lincoln LS if the engine light on the dash will not go off?

To find out what is wrong with it you will have to take it to a repair shop or the ford dealer with a computer to hook it up, but the engine light being on something is wrong with the car, it kinda sounds like a ingition coil pack going out, if so it will only get worse and could also be many other little things, but it must be repaired before the light will go off, and needs to be repairs ASAP so it doesnt cause anymore damage, that is why the light came on is for it to be serviced and repairs ASAP.

I have the same problem with a 2001 LS V8 sport. They diagnosed this earlier this year when I felt a subtle pulsing in the car during heavy acceleration. They said they must change both according to Lincoln service number SSM 512 481 091 and replace BOTH pumps (which shocked me to find there was two). They listed the pumps as YW42-9275-BC and YW42-9H307-BA. Apparently these cross reference to part number E2274M from Airtex but I'll know more soon as it is on order from my local jobber. I do know that if you order a 'pump' from A/C number MU2013 you will get a sender unit only which is listed improperly (and probably why the Airtex costs about 25% more). One other item the dealer replaced on my LS was the Idle solonoid but that shouldn't impact the car while driving, just while idling.

Why might the brake and battery warning lights stay on past 2500 RPM?

Sounds like the alternater is on it's way. I will add something to this. I messed with a couple of alternator replacements but the last time the warning lights started coming on, I pulled the plug out of the alternator and gave the contacts a good cleaning both on the wiring harness plug and the socket of the alternator. You don't have to pull the alt to do this (at least on the '90s pickup) although it is hard to get that dude out of there. Anyway, no more problems. Actually, I have found on Toyota and Nissan both that anytime a warning light comes on it is very prudent to disconnect the suspected part (sensor, sender etc.) and make sure those contacts are clean. This has saved me buying and replacing a Nissan alt, a Toyota A/C compressor and a couple of O2 sensors on my personal vehicles and the advice has saved a few friends some expensive repairs too. Definitely worth the cost of some contact cleaner from Radio Shack or the parts store and the little labor to disconnect and clean the connectors.

How do you install a tach?

This entirely depends on the vehicle and the type of tach your referring to such as a add on tach or an OEM in dash tach. To explain how to install and OEM tach would take far to long. I would suggest a add on tach that mounts basically where ever you want to mount it. Most of these tachs explain the installation instructions. What are ABS EBD EPS in a car?

ABS: Antilock Brake System (or Anti-locking Brake System) - enables you to steer whilst keeping the brake pedal full on. Can be felt as a vibration through the pedal when it cuts in. Also useful in stopping in a straight line if one side is on slippery stuff and the other on grippy stuff (non-ABS will tend to spin). EBD: Electronic Brake Distribution (or Electronic Brake-force Distributor) - alters how much of the brake force goes to the front and how much to the rear. Cars always have more braking on front as if the rears lock before the front then the car will spin. How much braking you can do with the rears depends on how much weight is in the vehicle so EBD dynamically adjusts this balance. Without it, the manufacturer sets up the balance so the rears don't lock when the vehicle is empty which is less braking than is possible when the vehicle is full. EPS: Electronic Power Steering - enables the amount of assistance with steering to be varied depending on speed and how much you turn the wheel. This means it can give lots of boost when parking the car whilst still giving you a good feel for the road at speed. As this was asked along with ABS and EBD, I think it might actually be ESP which is asked about. ESP: Electronic Stability Program - senses when the car is about to go out of control and can apply an individual brake to a wheel to help avoid the spin. Will not totally prevent the spin but means that it takes more to lose control. Often also used to give traction control where brakes may be applied if a wheel begins to spin due to too much power for the grip. N.B. many cars have TCS (Traction Control System) without having ESP.

What does the brake warning light mean?

It means something is wrong with the brake system. Check fluid level first; if it is low, refill it and test the brakes again. Also check that your emergincy brake is fully released. Be sure the parking brake pedal (if it is a push one) is all the way up. Either way, don't delay getting it checked soon.

Have you checked to see if you are out of brake fluid?

If is a Honda Accord 1992 2 door, you may need to check for bad bulbs/loose connections.

The brake light in my car can come on if the parking brake pedal does not come up all the way when I release it. One of the cables going to the rear drums has rust in it causing it to bind and not release all the way.

It may indicate that brake system hydraulic pressure is too low to safely stop the car.

If the light is on all the time, ensure that the parking/emergency brake is fully released. If the light only comes on when you press down on the brake pedal, check to ensure that you have the proper level of brake fluid in the reservoir and that you have no air in your brake lines. You may need to bleed the air from the brake lines.

Check the brake light bulbs to ensure that all of them are working. Some cars can sense a bad bulb and notify the driver by illuminating the brake warning light.
