Explain various storage devices and their characteristics?

Three benefits of using secondary storage are that you can back up data, free up space on your primary storage, and more easily share data with other users. Secondary storage may be local to the computer or remote, such as with cloud storage.

DVD's will probably be phased out over the next 10 years as streaming videos such as YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix have taken over in popularity.

DVD-RW DVD-RW discs can be used by some operating systems like MS Vista as regular recordable discs, meaning that you cannot alter what is recorded on them without erasing and recording new alter version of the same file. They cab be also used almost identically as hard drive, where you can record for example MS Word and alter it by opening it by Word application. In situation when you are using it as hard drive (or old fashion floppy disc for that matter), it has to be formated before such use.

While not yet sanctioned officially as an SI Unit, it is likely that 1 carabyte will be adopted as 1000 yottabytes - will be needed by 2020.

These are called compression programs. They take a file (or a series of files) and compress the data. Be aware that compressing files does not always reduce the file size drastically, especially if the file has already been compressed or is in a compressed form such as some video formats. Trying to compress them can even result in a file being bigger than the original.

Many of these programs accomplish compression by finding repeating fragments of characters or data, replacing it with a unique code, and include the code and data fragment into a dictionary in the resulting compressed file. Decompressing the file is done by extracting the dictionary, scanning the file for dictionary codes and replacing them with the data fragment. The most dramatic effect is when compressing many files into one archive. Compressing a single file often will have little effect on the amount of data it takes up on the hard drive.

There are many programs that perform this function: WinZip, WinRAR, and 7Zip, zip, gzip are common and widely used. Some programs have options tospecify how thoroughly to scan the original file and how much compression should be attempted. The more compression desired, the longer it takes to scan and study a file.

Some of the compression programs also allow specifying a password to be use for encrypting the file and the password is required to extract information afterwards.

Microsoft Windows versions as well as some other companies offer the ability to compress a whole drive or directory.

An external drive will be a little slower because of the speed differences between SATA (internal) and USB (external). The obvious advantage to an external is changeability, ease of access, etc.

A DVD RW drive can only burn to a DVD R DL disk if it is labeled as having that capability. If your drive has a DL label, it is dual-layer capable. If you still can't tell, you can download a free software called "VSO Inspector" to give you this information about your drive.

This can indicate several things. If the light has stayed on since the computer was powered on, the floppy ribbon cable is on upside-down. If it happens when the operating system has booted, you may have a program that is trying to read the disk and is failing. It may also be a problem with the drive itself, and it needs replacing.
