The dead sea is getting more salty. Like all seas, rivers which carry bits of sedimentary rock, enter the sea and "dump" whatever they carried on its journey to the sea. Because the the sea water contains salt, which increases the density of the water. Therefore, the ships becomes even less dense than the water, making it float higher.

Dead sea is a salt lake which is located in middle east. It borders Jordan to the east and Palestine and Israel to the west. It is 9-6 times more saline than ocean hence no marine life can flourish in it. That is why it is called dead sea.

The salinity in isolated seas and salt-water lakes (for example, the Dead Sea) can be considerably greater. SO there's a high salinity in the Dead Sea. :D

There are roughly about 9,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 cubic gallons of water in the dead sea. But the dead sea is very slowly shrinking so in 100 years time there will only be 9,000,000,000 cubic gallons of water in the sea!

Diving or going under the surface of the water in the dead sea is very difficult due to the high salt concentration, makes the water more dense, allowing objects to float more easily. If you find a place high enough to jump from, you can still dive, but its fairly shallow and the bottom is covered with sharp crystallized salt that will probably hurt you, and there is a pretty thick layer of mineral oil in the Dead Sea that will coat your entire body and make you extremely uncomfortable if you get you face wet.

The reason that most people go to the Dead Sea is because it is fun and how fantastic your skin is after doing the ultimate full body mud wrap. The Dead Sea water has the highest salt content of any body of water on the planet. As a result, it is impossible to sink in the water and it's even almost impossible to stand up once you've gotten to a decent depth. One of the most interesting thing is that as you get close to the water, everyone seems to start to laugh.

In Oct 2009, my wife and I visited Jordan and stayed at a resort/spa on the Dead Sea. Do not make the mistake that this look like a normal lake or an ocean beach. Be careful of the the entry into the water, the shore is covered with salt encrusted rocks.

The next next warning is do not submerge your face into the water. The salt water will burn your eyes and sinus. If you or someone one you are near does this, they will need to get out of the water immediately to flush their eyes and sinuses. It is best if there is a fresh water shower nearby.

The immersion of your head in the water will cause you much pain in your eyes and will flood your sinus cavities with brine. The result is not being able to see when your eyes are open and your sinus will fill with mucus trying to get rid of the salt water. My symptoms of congested sinus lasted about 3 hours.

Once properly flushed the red eyes will disappear and the sinus will continue their healing process of draining mucus normally requiring you to blow your nose often like you have a cold.

You will not make the same mistake twice.

Humans can swim in the Dead Sea.

Due to its salt content, you will float very high up and this can make it difficult to swim.

You should also be carefull. If you get this water in your eyes, then the pain is really bad.

I would recommend a bottle of fresh water to accompany you in order to rinse out your eyes just in case.

River water picks up salt from the ground and carries it along. Normally, the rivers flow into the sea. In the case of the Dead Sea, the water evaporates and leaves the salt behind, just as has happened to the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
